well there's certainly crabby groups out there

but i'm thankful for the ones who do it for series that will never see the light of day on any streaming service ... and no not those "naughty" ones but i think of the gintama movies and series that no one picked up, like seven sins.

and ofc there's the no-one-would-have-known-without-fansubs. true, CR is a testament to that itself. But of course there's always those in it for the money.

same goes for manga scanlations...

Fansubs were great way to access anime back in the day.

But I no longer use fansubs. I doubt they made profits. Most donation would go to website hosting etc.

The official english translation for High School of the Dead was originally a fansub and the company that produced it or published it enjoyed it enough to make it the official dub.

I think they're the only ones that liked it though.

Exactly this is why they need to exist.

I think the OP here wasn't referring to any fansubber group but to a *certain* group that indeed not only does rip CR and Funi subs but even has the gall to claim they are "actually fansubbing" and ask donations for it (well, to run the servers, but yeah). Early fansubbers are actually what rose interest enough to create a demand for services like CR and Funi to exist; and I think that to an extent it's good that piracy exists because it forces the companies to realize that they need to update their business models when it comes to selling. If it wasn't for piracy, I don't think we would have Crunchyroll, or Netflix, or Steam, GOG.com, Humble Bundle, you name it. We would still have crappy overpriced DVDs as the only option. Plus, people who a) doesn't have the money or b) doesn't have enough interest/investment in something to buy it might still pirate it and then contribute to creating fame around it. That's how Game of Thrones became a worldwide phenomenon for example, and even where people pirated the series, it probably contributed to a boost in sales of books, gadgets etc. and in general in free advertisement (if I had a penny for every GoT meme I've ever read on the internet I'd be rich).

But yeah, *that* group strikes me as a bunch of assholes. Not all fansubbers are, some put genuine effort and actually make a better job than Crunchyroll or Funimation at this (no offence but yeah, you could REALLY use hiring some of those guys sometimes ). But *those* guys are definitely trolls.

i like some of the fansubbers. i wouldn't be able to see all anime that i see without their help and they also provide quality. and they do need funds to keep their function going. so...

You know what I don't miss about fansubs? "Translator's notes" that take up more than a quarter or the top of the screen, are too small to read without pausing, and explain things that people who are old enough to go on the internet and hunt down fansubbed anime can reasonably know.

I have no problems with fansubs, but they should not ask money for fansubbing something that they do not own >:<

Ok the first one that say that hate them show me a way to get Kara No Kyoukai in HD or Jhin-Ro in HD with AC3 5.1 without losing a Kidney.
We have the "darker" fansubs for hoes seeking content +18 or 21++
With out fansub would a impossible task in middle earth to get Karas in HD
After having 1.18 TB in each hard drives of Fansub stuff. You will appreciate it. (Third word country like Fansubs too)

Hey there hey there, fansubbers were once my heroes. Uploaders in general, actually. I considered them one league above humanity.
