Please tell me that you are a troll. If you are not, do some research and you can see that Free! Eternal Summer is licensed by Funimation for a home video release and it is going to have a dub. CR has the rights to season 1 though.

That's... literally exactly what the first post was saying though

Eternal Summer is licensed by Funimation and is getting a dub/release; the first season is still kind of in limbo since the rights for home video release are with Crunchyroll and as far as I'm aware CR doesn't actually do those. The first season was obviously what they were referring to here

Starting a forum topic pleading with CR was probably not the most realistic way to accomplish anything, but otherwise I don't really get why everyone is acting like the OP is some idiot spouting nonsense here

I don't think Crunchyroll would have any say in it. They just handle streaming rights, not physical distribution ones. That's up to Funi and whoever they have to go talk to in Japan to get video rights.

FUNi said that the reason they don't have the distribution rights to the first season of Free! is because CR has those distribution rights.

dafuq is CR gonna do with that

Unless...they're also entering the physical media arena

Open your eyes...

Oh shit, CR master race.

The OP is not trolling and is factually correct. Apparently, CR has the home video rights to S1 of Free!, Iwatobi Swim Club, along with streaming rights. FUNi has the home video rights for S2 of Free!, Eternal Summer, only. Source:

Regarding the Home Video Rights for Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Posted by Michelle on 10/17/2014 at 6:41pm

We’ve been getting a lot of questions today regarding the Anime News Network Answerman column, where Justin Sevakis states that Crunchyroll holds the home video rights for Free! Season 1. We know that many of you fans have been very curious about the home video rights situation, ever since our initial announcement of the simulcast of season 2 (Free! -Eternal Summer-).

We would absolutely love to make an English dub for season 1 and distribute it on home video, and we would be more than happy to work with Crunchyroll to make it happen. We have reached out to Crunchyroll to see if they would be interested in collaborating on this release; however, we have not heard back yet. Stay tuned for future developments though—we’re excited to report that we will be announcing the dub cast for season 2 very soon, so please follow our Free! -Eternal Summer- Facebook page or Tumblr to be the first to hear the news!

It isn't the first time this has happened. It typically happens when that is the only way CR can obtain the rights to a series, and the cost seems justified.

If anything, Funimation is giving CR the right to stream Free since they own the license in NA.

Funimation has the rights to the second series, CR has the rights to the first series, including the home video rights (which they rarely do for a series). As per my reply above, while rare, this isn't the first time.

Many people learned that CR had the home video rights in this Answerman column at ANN, and it was also later confirmed by Funimation (see sonic720's reply above).

The joke is on all the facepalming people, since in a case of "strange, but true", CR actually does have the home video rights to the first Free! series.

Thanks for the people who defended me and didn't call me an idiot...

Sentai Flimworks has some sort of agreement with CR I think, so that's why most of the time the anime that gets dubbed by SF is streamed on CR. And Viz Media too. But I do think there must be some talk between Funi and CR, because they are both streaming Yona of the Dawn, though I could be wrong. But CR does have the home video rights to the first season of Free!, and Funi only has the rights to the second one. So they have to make an agreement of sorts so Funi can also have home video rights to both seasons.

OK here's my take on this.

1. Funimation doesn't want just Home Video rights, They will at least want to be able to stream the dub on Funimation.com

2. Crunchyroll isn't in a great position here. Funi goes on their blog to try and make out like they're the good guys because they reached out to CR for the Home Video rights for S1. Crunchy really doesn't get anything out of it, besides some Cash, and gives Funi some ammunition to try and steal away some of CRs customers if they agree to do this. If I were CR I'd give Funi the HV and the right to stream the S1 dub, if they were to give up their exclusive on the Fairy Tail episodes not on CR, plus some cash, or some other arrangement for some of Funimations exclusives to appear on CR.

TL:DR They have some work to do to make sure both sides benefit from this.

I'm just hoping something can be worked out between them so that we can get our hands on S1 as well as S2. *fingers crossed*

In which case, I'll apologise for not taking her seriously, and move on.

"Reached out" could mean many things. It could be as little as just indicating they are interested in those rights, but it could also mean "We made an insulting low ball offer we knew they wouldn't accept".

I definitely believe that any arrangement should include some streaming rights for CR. Funimation doesn't really make use of any streaming rights they have outside of the US or Canada, so those would seem to be the best item for both parties for them to parlay with.

OTOH, looking at it from Funimation's viewpoint, any deal favorable to CR could be seen as encouraging CR to take a few more risks on obtaining home video licenses in the future if necessary to obtain a title.

I suspect Funimation probably won't be under too much pressure to take action until they see how the second series performs on home video.

What he said. CR should definitely hold out until they get something really favorable like streaming rights to ALL the Fairy Tail episodes or maybe some series that's not here at all because they are currently exclusive to Funimation.
