Kotoura-san actually... Well, I actually went in not knowing what it was, but the first 5-10 minutes gave me certain expectations; it's what came after that shat on my expectations and then got its feeble grandmother to vomit on them in her dying breath. Such wasted potential.

Pretty much my experience with that show as well. I'd be not quite so harsh but it did get mediocre fast-- with still a few very nice moments, and a few more downright awful moments. Such a let down after an opening few minutes that promised serious, thoughtful, drama.

Spice and Wolf.

I came in expecting adventures in a olde timey world. What i got was lesson in economic structures. Seriously...

Also this :

Sums up Maoyuu Maou Yuusha's premise. Though i do know that it get's good later on and has less focus on the economic aspect and changes to political.

Gatchaman Crowds: Was expecting a modern reboot of science ninja team Gatchman with some quirk, got a totally different show that was Gatchaman in name only with a really annoying protagonist and a plot that didn't really make that much sense. I knew it wouldn't be exactly the same, and I didn't mind it, but it went beyond that to the point of being unwatchable. And it gets a second season, go figure.

I was expecting more action in SAO instead of all this romance stuff. I feel like it kind of killed the mood.

I expected too much from Kill la Kill because of TTGL. I thought I was going to get an anime on par with TTGL in terms of plot, characters, world, and silliness. And Kill la Kill only had the silliness aspect. I get that it's an anime that supposed to not be taken seriously and meant for fun, but that was also the main focus for TTGL, yet it was executed miles better.

I mean, the first episode ends and I'm sitting there thinking "Who are these people and why should I care"
All I see is Shadow the Hedgehog who lacks common sense, an idiot with ADHD, and a dictator.
It's like the show just decided to throw pacing out the window and said "Eh we're Trigger, all we have to do is slap our name on it, and it'll sell."

Oddly, I wound up liking Cross-Ange because it wasn't what it sounded like from the description.

I had no expectations for Cross-Ange because the first episode had a premiere screening event in Tokyo and people literally laughed at how bad it was in the screening. So I knew I was in for a complete shit show and it did not disappoint. If your fanservice is so absurd that Japanese otaku laugh at it during your screening event you know you've farked up.

well, when i watch a story, i expect the characterisation to be consistent, and/or there should be development of characters. i expect the humour to be funny if there's humour. i expect this of all anime.

those are pretty low expectations. i don't even care if there's no romance or too much romance, as long as the characters and dialogues are engaging.

like koihime musou has tons of yuri fanservice, it didn't bother me since it has other redeeming qualities.

Attack on Titan. I honestly think it would be better if it's just a movie. Some part of it just doesn't make sense to me even after reading the manga.

Glasslip. I expected a romance with reasonable build up to the relationships and an interesting plot about psychic powers and maybe a bit of time traveling. Sadly, that was too much to ask for and I ended up looking at a piece of cardboard for 13 weeks hoping for a mind blowing twist at the end. Biggest disappointment of the year.

This.... romance, slice-of-life, coming-of-age, PA Works? I was so there. And so disappointed.
