Yeah, this was me too with Nagi. I was used to PA Works making good SoL shows about interesting walks of life, but got mostly sappy school romance drama here instead. Which would have been fine if I cared about the characters and it was done well, but it was so blah in the second half for me as things shifted to a dark and depressing mode. In the first half I had to overlook the immaturity of the kids, but was enjoying what I thought would be a story about the significance of relationships between the sea and land people. In the end it was pretty much an interesting concept wasted on generic school romance. But then Glasslip came and showed me PA Works is capable of even worse.

Never happened. I pick my anime like picking kids or something. Meticulous.

Mekakucity Actors. I don't know what i expected really, but it felt like i was watching some poor mans Monogatari or something. A genuine example of a show that's been "Over-Shafted".

Other than that one, i try to pick the shows i watch carefully.

LOL for me it was Gintama. I saw AMV's of how awesome the action scenes were. i was expecting some bloody samurai show. Turned out to be the funniest and best anime i have ever seen. So worthit!

True lol. Gintama is the funniest anime ever.

Should I make the obvious Terra Formars statement (i.e. I expected an awesome, bloody sci-fi action anime and got a black screen instead)?

SAO always gets blasted in the beginning of these types of threads. It's kind of comical at this point.

Hmm, probably Wizard Barristers, although that should end up under 'shows that sucked because you hate the protagonist and everything they stand for'.

SAO gets another vote for me too, absolutely no substance at all, just a flashy setting with flashy characters.

How can you not be fascinated by the love tessaract?

Tessaract Middle school romances make me a bit. At least they got older eventually.

Not a Cecil fan from Wizard Barristers? She just wanted to save her mother

Chaika. I expected a story of a retired army vet trying to find a purpose in life and got...body part treasure hunts? Yeah, I dropped it after 4 episodes.

Cecil was the example of the perfect privileged golden child that just has no @#*( $% idea. It would have been a good show if whatsername, the one they consistently portrayed as a bitch, were the main character. You could absolutely sympathize with her in an oldschool shojo manga kind of way.

Also, there used to be an animated flowchart of hte nagi@ thing, it was pretty hilairous.

For me it was Gatchaman Crowds. I was expecting an updated version of the original Gatchaman (similar to Macross Frontier). Instead, I got something that stole the name Gatchaman and that is where the similarity ended.

For me this was the exact opposite. I saw fate stay night first and that ruined the ending of fate zero - which ended with me only thinking that fate zero was good rather than one of the best animes of the modern era like everybody else seems to think. Fate zero had a mediocre ending and I was a fool to think it'd be any different.

A Certain Magical Index is one example. I expected it to be pure fantasy (with no sci-fi) centered around the exploits of a certain wizard protecting (or searching for) a magical index. To my dismay, I was greeted with a harem with one of the most annoying MC's i've ever seen. I sat through it amazed at how much wasted potential it had. Luckily Railgun made up for it. The is all personal opinion, btw.

Destiny of the Shrine Maiden is another. Go watch the show - everything aside from the genders of the main characters was the exact opposite of what I was expecting lol. I'm sure the show is very good, but my expectations made it extremely unenjoyable to me personally.

There are also a lot of deceptive harems that fall into this category. They lure you in with the cover art, making you think it's a CGDCT show, and then they spring the bland, uninteresting, oftentimes perverted MC on you and start forcing the romance. Ugh.

I don't mean just hype, I've seen people say they disliked SAO because they wanted a good romance. That's not something to expect out of SAO

havn't gone down the threat reading yet, seems like a great topic to discuss.

But I wanted to say something here!

Oddly, SAO holds a rather powerful Romance card in it's deck, the "actual completion" card.

You see, the show goes so far to showcase the poorly written love of Kirito and Asuna, that they DO actually show the romance happening. Nothing about the characters perhaps, but you see the romance.

They meet, they fight together, they collaborate, they witness hell together in the form of a strange Anubis looking boss, they face hell again at the hands of a murderer, they kiss, they sex, they move in together, more sex, fetish play, they adopt a child, and final boss hell.

While the way it's told is super poor, you can't deny the actual progress the show made in regards to the Romance.

WHICH IS ALL I EVER WANT OUT OF MY GOD DAMN ROMANCE ANIME! WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO DO? WHY DO SO MANY SHOWS END WITH THE DAMNED "lets hold hands" or "And then, because you didn't evolve into kissing yet, A CHALLENGER APPROACHES!"
JUST GIVE US PAY OFF GOD DAMN IT!

And....I don't know what you were expecting out of Gurren Lagann, but it's a show that you should have at least hit a solid end-point to one of the arc's before any of those awkward time skips. That's an acceptable "haven't finished yet" statement to me.

Index and Railgun make me think o another possible collolary; "Shows you liked until you thought about them too much"

Spice and Wolf, i`m expecting slice of life adventure but turned out to be economic teachings.

Because it`s trying to combine Durarara and Monogatari but with full of nonsense.
After the the 12th episode, everything makes no sense.

Kagerou Project is way better but Mekaku city actors is just butchered adaptation.
