So it's been a couple of years and I've started to notice this particular quirk of mine, that being the fact I can't sit down to play video games alone without feeling horribly lonely. This loneliness is especially bad with hand held game systems, the thing is I don't need to be talking to anyone to play or have them take note of the fact I'm playing. Any person can be doing there own thing in the background and just knowing there in the room with me makes it feel normal to play video games. So I was wondering if anyone else had any similar problem .

Not I. I have no problem playing video games alone. Mind you, I'm rarely alone as I'm married & have 4 kids, but still. I generally am playing my handhelds alone or when traveling and mostly focus on the game. Which, currently, is Pokemon.

I have always been playing video game alone.

It depends on the game. I don't play Mario Party/Kart by myself. Generally, I can play video games by myself.

To give an example of my experience , I started playing the legend of zelda twilight princess in 2010 and I only beat it earlier this year with the feeling I didn't complete it.

I feel that way with some games, any shooter, Skyrim, Fallout, Grand Theft Auto, and Left 4 Dead are ones that come to mind immediately.
Unless I have either someone present or a friend to play with online, I can't have fun on L4D or GTA at all.

However, when I play Dark Souls II I don't seem to have a problem. Or if I play fighting games online.

Not really, no. I find myself both enjoying games when with others as well as when I'm alone. Though I do definitely have different tastes depending on the situation. I actively prefer not to play anything deep or storyline focused when with others and instead opt either to play something multiplayer or, oddly enough, I like to watch someone else play something a little more involved. When I'm alone, though, I'm all about the deeper and more engrossing gaming experiences (RPGs, story focused games, etc.)

My preference is to be alone when I'm playing single-player/story driven games. Or difficult dungeon crawlers and other difficult games requiring lots of concentration. But if it's an online sort of deal, then yes, I rather not be alone. Like when you're in a FPS multiplayer match and no one's talking on their mics. It feels so depressing (unless we're dealing with 6 year old ragers then that's a different story).

I know that feeling. It doesn't affect me greatly, but I always feel like I have more fun when I'm playing a game with someone else.
Even if it's a single player RPG and we have banter back and forth, it just makes it seem more fun.

I hate playing when there are other people around. I don't play online. Only time people are okay is if it's split screen multiplayer or if it's not my console/handheld being played.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. By default, I game a lot by myself because I'm not always able to play with my friends (schedule conflicts) and a lot of the games I play aren't ones that my friends play (the curse of the unintentional hipster!).

It really depends on the game and the mood I'm in. I'm quite happy gaming by myself 90% of the time, but when I play an online RPG or something, I wish I could get a great party going with friends like I used to years ago during the Dreamcast days of Phantasy Star Online.

Playing solo is honestly my preferred kind of gaming.
I've actually started playing way more story-driven games as opposed to games that rely on online experience to be fun over the last couple of years.

As for playing with other people in person...
I'll play like Smash Bros Melee or Project M with my friends but the skill gap is so big that it stops being fun.

what in gods name are you all talking about, when your playing a good video game it's supposed to have your full attention. When your playing a good video game you're not supposed to be thinking about your life. You're supposed to become the character your playing, while being 100% invested on if they succeed or fail in the world they live in. I may feel lonely before i start a video game up but while it's on i feel as though i've mentally left my body. In a video game i can be a drifting beast, i can be a gangster that commits crimes, i can rescue my friends from the end of the world, i can fight off zombies and aliens, in video games me and my whole life can be perfect. only when i put the control down to i think about if i'm lonely or how my life is going...
