Should there be a world wide limit on the number of children a person can have?

1, 2, or 3 children are fine, but should people be allowed to have up to 10 and 20 children?

Considering the rising cost of living and world's depleting resources and environmental pollution, should the number of children a person has be limited to at least three?

Tell me what you think?

If you can afford it, I don't care how many kids you have. If you can't afford it - I still don't care, it's not my place to limit the number of children a person can have. I just worry about whether those children in the second example will be fed.

I grew up as the oldest of 8 and currently have 4 kids. We can afford our family and we'll figure it out to ensure that's always the case.

You should have as many kids as you can afford.

If I were to be bluntly honest I would say yes, we should. We're already putting a strain on the ecosystem so it would better ensure the survival of modern society if we limited population growth.

The problem being even though humans live in societies our survival imperative is bound not to the society but to the individual. So even though limiting population growth would benefit both the survival of the society and, in the long run, the survival of the individual the programmed imperative to maximize the chance for the continuation of an individual's genes will win out, society's survival be damned.

I stand by my cannibalism policy and say that you can have as many children as you can eat.

Since some people have no children it's hard to average it out. In many places the birth rates are low. Other places, mainly developing countries have rising birthrates though they still have problems with a large number of infant mortalities. It'd go against human rights to forcefully control people's fertility.

People should have however many children they want. Some are unable to have children, and some don't wish to, which keeps the population from growing too fast.

Yes. We should definitely limit the number of children. Too many people in the world already.

Problem is, birth rates are very high in the poorest countries and low to the point of being a problem in first world countries. So as people become more educated, have higher professional aspirations, etc, they naturally tend to have less children and start having them later, therefore overpopulation is a problem that fixes itself as long as living conditions continue to improve. If, on the other hand, you live in a G8 country you should probalby have more, do it for the economy.

Sure. Ideally I would say two max and ideally 1.

It's all about population control.

BUUUUUUUT.... regarding any decisions with population control, how do you enforce it? and how would you choose who goes and who stays?

And who gets to make those choices? and what if the choices made weren't in your favor?

This is why I recommend rapid industrialization of most 3rd world countries (and those teetering between). First world countries actually tend to have the problem of LOW birth rates, so, whatever's causing it seems to be working and should be encouraged.

I'm going to propose another idea - How about having children for people who can't have children?

There are a lot of women who enjoy being pregnant but don't want and/or can't support any more kids. I would love for society to be more encouraging for these women to consider surrogacy to help other couples have children. Obviously, there would be compensation given to these women who offer to go through with it, but I can imagine no higher gift you can give another person than that of a child.
