I use CD Japan because I think they don't overcharge (at least not as much as some others?) and it's easier to choose among the shipping options with them. They email me Japan Post tracking numbers.

I've tried Playasia but I think they do overcharge... It just seems more expensive with them. I would only consider them if I couldn't find something on CD Japan.

Mandrake and Amiami got mentioned multiple times.

Amiami for everything pre-order (besides the stuff on GSC global or Native global), Mandarake for used stuff that I can't find on Amiami's used section.

I find that other places tend to charge more than Amiami, besides maybe HLJ. I've only used CD Japan for cds - Vocaloid these days, and Jrock back in the day.

Thanks. Have you used HMV Japan? They seem to have a big print selection.

Nah. I've heard of it but I mostly collect anime figures and plush and pillowcases and that sort of merch. I hear HMV Japan is good though, from the people that do use it.

for anime magazines, blu-ray or music cd, I order from amazon.co.jp. Their books and CD's are usually $2 more expensive, but I tend to order like 10+ things in one go, so the shipping turns out to be cheaper than the other sites. So I always use amazon.co.jp for magazines, books and blu-ray discs. Their blu-ray is probably the cheapest, too.

However, i can't order things like pens, pillow cases, or anime merchandise from amazon.co.jp, which is really annoying. In that case, i've been ordering from AmiAmi (cheapest), or Plamoya (really expensive, but they have stuffs I want in stock).

As for figurines, i ordered my first figures (Mako and Haru from Free!) from Nippon Yasan. I didn't read any reviews on this site before buying, i was desperate, because these figures were sold out everywhere and overpriced, and Nippon Yasan gave the cheapest price, so i ordered from them. Then I read the reviews later and there were so many negative reviews, which made me scared. But i got the legit items and fast shipping.
Nippon yasan is not that bad as people say it is, and they ship instantly...

I seriously didn't know we have to order figures like 6months in advance... -___- figure collection is so cut-throat (to me). At most, i only pre-order like 1 week in advance.

So now that I've learnt my lesson, I'm ordering Satsuki Kiryuin figures like 6months in advance from AmiAmi

________

off-topic, i'm looking for this alarm clock, it's about $70, does anyone know where i can find it in a store that ships it internationally??? i found one on mandarake, but it's like $150... (and it's not even brand new)

On your choice regarding CD Japan, I second that. What I perceive as fair prices, a nice array of shipping options, and tracking numbers which are a plus. I've never had anything go wrong ordering from them (i.e. packages arrived in timely manner/never got stuck at customs, packages always arrived in mint condition, etc). I was lucky enough to land a "limited/collector's/whatever" edition of a 1/8 Tharja statue (YES, THAT Tharja) and she is my favorite. lol

Though I'm not 100% sure where else I would buy from, so I will be keeping on eye on this thread...

I've started collecting stuff from Love Live (went completely ga-ga brainmelt after a weekend marathon) but I'm scared to get a Love Live figure because I know that once I start with one I'll want the whole rest of the 9-member group...

I have been looking for a trustworthy overseas retailer for anime (DVDs) for a while now, but haven't had any real luck. Prices are either too good to be true (fake/pirated merchandise), or way too expensive. At this point, I've given up. People in Japan happily pay a buck a minute for anime, so it's pretty silly to think someone would sell the same product for a reasonable price and ship it halfway across the world.

You could try the used discs on Amazon Japan if you don't mind those.

cdjapan mostly it's run by a Japanese company called Neowing so you are buying from the source and can be sure you are getting what is advertised. They offer a variety of post options from more expensive registered FedEx and cheap SAL options they also offer additional services like proxy services for other Japanese stores where they can buy things on your behalf and send you it. You can buy just about anything on cdjapan to Japanese CD's,DVD's and Blu Ray for anything from J pop to Anime you can also buy Anime goods and figures, Calendars, all kinds of magazines and manga anthologies etc etc. They also sell clothing and apparel.

Also use From Japan as a proxy for buying stuff on Yahoo Auctions they offer reasonable charges for their services and again a full selection of postal options so it's not too expensive.

CDJapan is what I use the most now, but if something's sold out there, I'll use Hobby Search. I used to use HLJ a lot, back when I was into buying figures. But CDJapan and Hobby Search both have the points systems, so that's nice.

I did some digging and found a site (kidnemo) that has brand new stuff that other sites don't... The catch is, the prices there are sky-high probably because they're US-based (I think). I'll just use it to window shop.

I use deputy services for most things as what I buy is artwork and that's never officially released

I recommend using Shoppingmalljapan.com. I use them to buy on Yahoo Japan.

God, it's been a really long time since I last heard that name... years! I remember people had very positive experiences when they ordered with them, but they've always been ridiculous priced as far as anything that's sold out elsewhere, because they sell for 'American aftermarket' price. If you're looking for older figures it's always best to just wait until it pops up on Amiami's used or Mandarake. Anywhere else and it's a high possibility that it's going to be outrageous for a lot of figures - even things that are really easy to get secondhand on the sites I mentioned.

It's honestly just best to stick with Japanese sites for stuff that's not on pre-order (and even then most of the time it's best to just go with those sites anyways) because otherwise you'll get gouged out the butt for everything.

If you wanna windowshop just use the search function on myfigurecollection.net. Then you'll know exactly the figures that are out, and people sell their old figures there too. I've gotten quite a few things there that I couldn't find anywhere else, and for great prices too! Secondhand is love. =)
