HAS THIS HAPPENED TO YOU!?

When I was a kid, all I ever did was watch anime. Of course, it was the usual stuff like Pokemon and Dragonball, the popular stuff back in the day. It was dubbed, of course. Then now and again I watched the usual subbed anime because it wasn't available and the internet really wasn't a big thing back then and it wasn't easy to watch all the time like now :P

Anyways, I've been watching One Piece on CR, and you guessed it, it's Subbed. I turn off my computer, turn on Adult Swim, and guess what's on? One Piece! I saw that it was the episode I was actually on! (what are the odds?!) So I decided to watch it just so I could catch up with everyone else watching it.

But, when I did turn it on... My ears beheld something I couldn't bear to listen to... DUBBED ANIME
It's like a curse now, and any Anime I watch that is Dubbed, I can't seem to get into it unless I'm watching it Subbed!

Has this happened to anyone else? I think it's so weird, yet I enjoy Subbed better than Dubbed xD

Side Note : It could just be with Anime I've watched Subbed and gotten used to the awesome voice acting then when I hear the Dubbed acting, it's just not right haha!

Same here.

Can't listen to dub anymore, because I'm so used to the good voice acting with subs. I mean they (the Japanese) specifically trained for it for years... and only the best of the best get chosen as the casts...

Subs sound more believable.

I always operated under the assumption that this was universally mutual.

I only watch a few anime series dubbed. Like the ones I have on dvd. xD But yeah other than that I usually watched subbed. The majority of the time I watch anime streamed, and what I find is almost always subbed. I do like it better that way though. Sometimes the English voice acting sounds really over exaggerated. Like they're trying too hard. Sometimes the Japanese versions sound like that too, but it just sounds more natural. Idk it's hard to explain and I'm tired. lol

I stumbled across Attack on Titan dubbed on television and felt pretty disgusted after a few minutes haha. I guess it just isn't for me either.

I can't watch dubbed anime either, but because I can't hear it over my laughing at the horrible voice acting! Seriously though, if you want to dry yourself out from crying tears of hilarity, dubbed anime is for you!

Yes, this feeling is universally shared although I did prefer the original Hellsing dubbed.

There are good subs, and there are bad subs. Just like there are good dubs and bad dubs. Also, there are plenty of badly done Japanese voice acting ones. But if you aren't Japanese, it is much harder to notice.

Which means a lot of times, subs seem better, I'll admit. Until you watch them with a Japanese friend who cringes and asks, "Can we please swap to dubbed?"

It all depends on the show, there is some really good dubs, and there are some really bad dubs.
A few shows that I liked the Dubs better than the subs were Code Geass, and Ghost in the Shell.

Eh, I personally prefer dubs over subs. Everybody has their own preference. It just gets kinda annoying when people try to insult someone else, simply because they have a different opinion than them. Also, when people act like their opinions are facts. haha please, don't make me laugh.

Anyways, I watch subs when the dubs aren't available, but much prefer dubs.

I'm with ya!
I prefer subs, but I don't really care too much if anyone else prefers dubs.
I listed my reasons why in another post, I'll just copy/paste it here :P

Pros of English Dubbing:
1. My native language

Cons of English Dubbing:
1. Americanization (Edits/Cuts from the original)
2. Not as high quality voice acting
3. Waiting for a company to Dub

The money just isn't there for dub voice acting, (which is totally understandable) so I prefer the higher quality original voices.
And... ya know, sometimes this happens...

I vastly prefer subs but dubs can be good sometimes.

The 4kids dubs though are awful.

Yeah same for me haha, though certain voice actors I can listen to like Crispin Freeman, his role in Hellsing as Alucard he had the English voice perfect. Most dubbed anime are like nails to a chalk board its only after coming back to watch them that I realize the Japanese do voices so much better with so much more effort which is something English voice actors do not posses in my opinion.

I think the recent decline in the quality of dubs in partially to blame. Listen to the dub of Black Lagoon. It was awesome. The dubs of High School of the Dead, Burst Angel, Rin (Daughters of Mnemosyne), Canaan, Sekirei, K-ON, My Bride is a Mermaid, and even Cat Planet Cuties were all pretty damn good in my opinion. But lately the quality of dubs has plummeted. I was waiting on pins and needles to buy the new Toradora dub. When I heard the trailer, I put away my credit card and tried to figure out how to overcome my disappointment.

I could go on about this, but I'll just summarize. I don't know what the hell happened to the dubbed industry, but they need to get back to what they used to produce. The crap I have heard lately is flat out embarrassing. I really hope things improve, because I am not going to spend $100 on a series out of pity...

Or maybe I will. The last thing I want to see is one of the big companies go out of business. I'll contribute what I can to feed this addiction.
