i hate english dubs, they are just horrid. The only dub in anime i can handle is inuyasha. Since the voices match the characters very well. Its one of the very few dubs that did a good job

I see a lot of people saying Inuyasha is best dubbed out of them all, and yet I've only seen the first few episodes xD I'll have to give it a gander.

I prefer subbed, for the same reasons others have said. But I watch dubbed as well. The first anime I watched (Speed Racer) was dubbed. The first anime I bought (Akira, Patlabor the Movie 1 and Patlabor the Movie 2) were dubbed. The first anime I saw in a movie theater and bought on VHS (Ghost In The Shell) was dubbed.

The problem I have with subbed is that sometimes I can't read the subtitles as well or as fast as I'd like to, so I'm constantly having to rewind a few seconds to reread the subtitles. It tends to stretch a 24 Minute episode to 30+ minutes.

So, when my eyes are tired or even when I'm sitting in front of the TV eating dinner, I prefer watching something in English. I keep telling myself I should learn to at least understand Japanese but I don't really have the time for it. Sad, but true.

You know I'm the same as you I started out watching Dragonball Z and digimon dubbed and I liked it but then I started watching one piece and bleach subbed . And when I watched it on the adult swim in English was just like "oh my god what is this is ?!" like it was a foreign language or something. I was just soooooo bad and sounded sooo wrong, like it should have never taken place. Lol when I try to argue about it with my friends they all tell me that dubs are better and I just am shocked like I can't believe this blasphemy I'm hearing. Never again will I ever watch a dub before I watch a sub . Subs always come first . And 98% of the time they're better. I also think that it depends on what you hear first if you like the dub version and you watch that first you're probably gonna like that more than the sub version. That was my impression with full metal alchemist I heard that dub first and I like it way more than the subs .

I'm going to shatter your little "subs are better" thing here.

I started out with dubs, and then moved to subs for most anime. In the earlier days, the subs annoyed the hell out of me because the voices sounded all wrong. Once I started watching subs with regularity, the reverse seemed true. Then I started watching both.

What I determined was that whichever way my initial viewing was (subbed or dubbed), that's how I began to associate the character's voice as being. So when I listened to the other format, it sounded jarring and really off. There's no real appreciable difference in the skill of the voice actor. (subtitle quality is up for debate, but there's still some "wiggle room" in translation to allow for dialog to be readable and understandable to the audience. Dubbers have to do the same, plus match lip flaps. regionalization is something that happened more in the past when anime was more "foreign" to the outside audience. [seriously??? rice ball vs. jelly donut in teh pokemanz? Like a 5 year old who never watched anime before is really going to know what rice balls are? please understand the intended audience])

your preference is solely based on your first impressions.

Not to hate, but I can't help but feel that those who watch dub are just stubborn and lazy. It's not a matter of opinions on the difference of talent when comparing Japanese and English voice actors. One is the fruit of an entire country's passion while the other is, how do I put this, well not.

Think of it like this. If the talent of a voice actor in Japan is comparable to an actor in Hollywood, then a dubbed voice actor is comparable to a kid in a high school play. Sure you can enjoy both, but let's not kid ourselves when it comes to which has more talent.

That said, if you prefer to watch dub that's fine and all. But please don't pretend like it's on the same level.

Um... american hollywood actors have done voiceovers for anime. And american porn stars have done the voice acting for hentai. meanwhile, watching american movies versus a number of subbed japanese flicks, the japanese flicks look like high school drama club plays... Same with some jDramas. Just sayin'

EDIT: actually, this "OMG THE VOICE ACTORS ARE SO GOOD!!!" bias might also be because you still don't understand the language/culture. So you can't tell what's right or wrong, and therefore just assume the acting is good because you cannot sense where and when they screw up.

I totally know this feeling. Every english dub I watch now I just cringe at the voice acting, it just sounds so bad to me even though I enjoyed the english pokemon as a kid so much.

"OH WOW JAPAN IS SO GR8, I CANT TELL THE ACTING IS SHITTY BECAUSE I DONT UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE RU3YR83Y483H" that is what most people who are "hate" dubs are like.

In the words of vic mignogna (voice of edward elric) "not everyone wants to read their anime, they want to watch it".

I love both dub and subs, and their is an absolutely disgusting and elitist mentality of these so called "sub only fans", who seek to demean anyone who watches dubs.

Voice acting is hard fucking work, there are just as many shitty japanese voice actors as there are western ones. You just dont notice it as much because you can't understand the language.

Some people really need to get off their high horse, and realize being a cunt on the internet to other fans is only making you look like fool.

I get so sick and tired of people saying "oh wow, you watch dubs? you cant be a real anime fan" when being a fan has nothing to do with your preference in audio.

I watch just about every show in both sub and dub.

There are alot of great dubs, and alot of bad ones. Just like there are alot of shitty subs and alot of great ones.

People often go into dubbed anime with a shit mentality and a shitty outlook on it and judge it before they even watch it, which causes them to not enjoy it.

Go and watch FMA: Brotherhood dubbed, you can't tell me those voice actors didn't work their asses off and truly loved doing it.

Go watch, bebop, jormungand, black lagoon and soul eater and tell me all dubs suck, those are just a few examples of excellent dubs.

Yep, I started off on watching dubs as well. Dragon Ball is the biggest one i can think of in which the dub is actually better than the sub. I also began watching all of Naruto dubbed until I realized they were quite a few episodes behind. I then switched to subbed and I'd never go back. Once you get used to watching anime with subtitles it is a lot better experience. You're eyes just gotta kinda be in 2 places at once so you don't miss any action.

I prefer subbed mostly because it's easier to find more subbed anime than dubbed. Plus, it's harder to find flaws with the voices if you don't know the language. I don't hate dubs, though. I prefer to watch some of my favorites dubbed because I watched them dubbed first.

Besides dragon ball and Black Butler(set in an English speaking country so the dubbed is awesome in my opinion) I cannot watch dubbed without cringing at how bad most of the voice acting is.

As long as the dub is decent quality (which happens), I'm cool with dubs. There are all manner of stuff where I'm good with wtching the dubs. So, no, I wouldn't say it's universal.

Oh joy. A subs vs. dubs thread.

I think the recent decline in the quality of dubs in partially to blame. Listen to the dub of Black Lagoon. It was awesome. The dubs of High School of the Dead, Burst Angel, Rin (Daughters of Mnemosyne), Canaan, Sekirei, K-ON, My Bride is a Mermaid, and even Cat Planet Cuties were all pretty damn good in my opinion.

Wait, what?

INCONCEIVABLE. My brain cannot accept this as even a slight possibility. This is UNPOSSIBLE. Azunyan is only cute in Japanese. Fuwa Fuwa Time can only be sung in Japanese. MOE MOE KYUN CAN ONLY BE A THING IN NIHONGO!
