Polygyny: In the US, do you think men should be able to have more than one wife?
Posted 11/16/14 , edited 11/16/14
Isn't that a bit weird for a woman do have more than one husband? She would get pregnant than what? Wouldn't they have to determine the father? I'm not being sexcist, I am a lady myself. But it just doesn't seem like such a great idea. Besides I'm pretty sure eastern cultures do this cause they aren't allowed to "date". So they get married. Thus resulting in more than one wife, kinda like getting married to all your ex's before they were ex's (does that make sense?). If they are up for it than why not?

I personally don't see what the problem is.

Look up Matriliniality (in face here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrilineality ) For most of history, heirs and such were determined through maternal lines because, obviously, the mother is the easiest to prove as parent. The father could be anyone. Forget marriage, etc. The father may be king, but it's the female line that determines the heir.

Still is a huge no-no for me.

I don't really care but I'm edging closer to no.

No. But frankly, I don't care what these strange folks do as long as their choices don't affect me. People will still do it in spite of statues defining it as illegal, especially in Amishland.

I'm a little surprised how lopsided the voting is so far.

Anyone paying attention knows this is the next cultural battlefront now that the iron fisted law of for same sex marriage has been set in motion especially due to court rulings and the votes of some state legislatures.

I say no. I think it is just up to how each person feels and thinks. Personally, I could never share someone that I love deeply with another woman.

I don't think same sex marriage and polygyny are the same anyway. Getting to marry who you love is different than how many people you get to marry.

Totally agree with you, but I think there's a lot of conservatives out there that do view them as similar, and on the other hand, there's a growing number of people that either experiment with polygamy or open relationships. I think sex is kinda saturating our media and the media itself seems to promote the idea of hooking up with just about anyone and the idea of, if not in a relationship with, at least seeing multiple people at the same time.

I don't agree with either of those things. I think gay rights are most certainly valuable, as it isn't right to step between two people who care and love each other that deeply, but I am against polygamy because it cheapens sex and the attachments that develop from sex (there's never a time where two people have sex repeatedly and then walk away unattached... nor should it be).

It may very well be the next battlefront, and I'm sorry but I'm going to be against multiple partners,

Exactly, very well put. I totally agree with what you are saying. Love is almost non-existent thanks to the media pimping out sexuality and completely focusing on the physical pleasure aspect. There are way too many vain people in the media cheapening what relationships are meant to and should be. I fear that these ignoble behaviors;ideas will become so ingrained in the younger generations that "love" between TWO people will lose it's true meaning and vanity will take it's place .

You realize you can fall in love with more than one person do you ? The hole idea that you can't truly love more than one individual is truthfully arrogant close minded way of thinking.

There a lot of polygamous families who are successful. All you need to do is look it up. Having sex with more than one person does't make it cheap. Is the reasons behind the sex that make it cheap.

Sure... and serial monogamy is allowed. I don't discount you can grow apart, but polygamy is totally different, and I still say you can't love more than one person "the most":

Polygamy reeks of dependency, lack of caring, and quite frankly, like relationships are "jobs" or you can just swap out roles.

I can also love many people in different ways, but I will only love one person as my mate and companion. That person is mine alone and I would be theirs alone. I thoroughly want to be selfish in that domain of my life, and I want someone equally selfish of me.

I have yet to find a case that convinces me.
