I sometimes hear troops say "We are risking our lives to fight for your rights so that you can say all the things you want to say."

Why is America the only country that needs to have military bases around the world to maintain the rights of their citizens? Actually, why do Americans still have to die to maintain free speech? I can name a few countries that have free speech that doesn't have imperialistic tendencies like America does.

What do you think when people say things like 'troops are fighting to protect your freedom.' ?

Edit: This thread is about blinded patriotism, as seen in the slew of comments below.

if you want to talk about about okinawa, go to this thread.

America is a imperialist nation that wants to take over the world under the guise of fake freedom. Anyone that joined the military was or is a dumbass that kills for their government to oppress the people of other nations.

hurr durr durr USA BAD BAD DAME DAME DAME

For what it's worth, after we ended WWII and attacked Japan, we went in there and, from the ground up, rebuilt the country. Japan would probably not exist as it does today if we had not done that.

Also, Japan never officially signed the treaty ending WWII.

The countries in the Middle East, we're not only there for oil as your overweight neckbeard Buzzfeed loving Facebook friends like to say. We're there to be the police and enforcers, and even bringers of some damn hope, to people whose governments and own people kill them, and enslave them, either through religion, terror, and genocide. Now that things are stabilizing, we're leaving. As we should.

The United States isn't the monster you people make it out to be. Yes, whether or not we have 1% of our American population out there in the armed forces so people like you and I could sit here and talk about how bad they are, we would still have freedom. But still....

It's kind of disgusting sometimes. Do we sit here and say "Well god damnit, why are there teachers? Teachers are just messengers of imperialism!" or "Golly gee I hate those firefighters for stopping fires and saving people from burning houses!!". No. We don't. The military and its bases are CAREERS first of all, and second what you think they are.

I'm the first man in my family not to be in the military. I have no intention of being in the military. Now if this was Israel or South Korea, you don't have a damn choice now do you? Americans, myself included, have gotta get off our "defeatist high horse" and see our government isn't the demon it's made out to be.

Because those specific countries are economic slaves to America. They have been made dependent on America. Not all countries want or need America's help.

I love the USA but I don't see the reason for us to be all around the world.
I met an Iraqi Christian who told me things were way better under Saddam Hussein. They were allowed to practice their religion freely and without fear. Now the whole country is way worse than when Saddam was in power.

People complain so much about america- most LIVE in the damn country. If you hate your own country so much, LEAVE. It's Legal to move to another free country (with less rights) so go ahead. Go to Canada, go to most of Europe, or Japan instead of crying over where you live.

Our Country is NOT perfect, no country is. If you have problems about it, get off your ass and become somebody so you can change it. If you say you can't, then you already gave up without trying. Good day.

its because we need bases to project our power. Okinawa is where 62% of US Navy 7th fleet is. 7th fleet headquarter is in Yokosuka.
You need a base to maintain longevity of your fleets its alot at present, it is the largest of the forward-deployed U.S. fleets, with 60 to 70 ships, 300 aircraft and 40,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel. Jewl of the fleet is USS George Washington CVN-73 Super Carrier

I don't understand why this conversation is starting circle around only Japan, don't forget about Europe. WW2 is over for almost 70 years but they still don't go.

A legitimate answer to the question I asked that does not propose to advert the topic completely. Well done.

Every living person risks their lives every day. Furthermore, people join the military for all kinds of reasons. If anyone is risking their life to protect my freedom of speech, it would have to be someone who is only incidentally protecting my freedom of speech by also protecting someone else's (or everyone else's) freedom of speech. I guess I just don't particularly care for the attitude that people in the military are somehow doing me a favor by simply living their lives.
