I recently finished Far Cry 3 (Was on sale so I thought what the hell, I'll give it a shot) and what do you know I ended up investing 23 hours into that game.

However having finished this I couldn't help, but notice how identical the next instalment in the series looks.
They did this with Battlefield as well with the game they slapped "4" on as if it was a new instalment, but let's face it, these games are nothing more but expansions.

They bring virtually nothing new to the table besides a map and some additional items.
As for the story, no offense, but I never found it very intriguing in the first place, same goes for any of the Battlefield games.

On top of this we have a pathetic pre-order campaign that will score you a nasty harpoon gun, but seriously, are you really going to sacrifice your integrity as a customer for the sake of a gimmick item in a game?

So what constitutes as a new instalment you may ask me.

Well take a look at Final Fantasy games before Square merged with Enix.
Every single Final Fantasy was vastly different from one another.
An entirely different universe for every instalment in fact.

Even something like Grand Theft Auto manages to bring something completely fresh and new to the table with every new instalment.

What's the difference from Far Cry 3 to 4 again?
The addition of a gyrocopter? Yeah, the addition of new items.
Gameplay has not been altered one bit, neither visually nor fundamentally.

It's an expansion, not a new instalment.
It worries me greatly that big triple A titles seems to be taking this trend on.
I can imagine it's much cheaper to just load up the last succes and add a bunch of new items, but at what cost?
the sacrifice of the quality of new instalments?

Elephants are the only change n you need ;)

But seriously you are right. Especially since we are on PC, where the quality of the port is always in question, it is much better to wait a month for a sale to kick in. Hopefully consumers will get sick and tired of buying broken/derivative products that the AAA business take a loom at their practices. Thankfully, it is not all doom and gloom. Titles like Alien: Isolation and Shadows Of Mirror prove that some publishers are still Willing to take risks. And of course you can't forget the indie scene!

Unfortunately those are IP's and do not really cover the issue of diluted sequels such as the ones I used for my example.
Indie games are also all over the place, the quality of the average indie title can't be defined like you can with triple A titles.
Some Indie games for example, are simply glorified flash games.

I hope it's not like Saints Row IV (an expansion that they just made a whole new game for the $$)
But from what I've seen, it's starting to look that way D:

It's not as bad as Saints Row IV was but it's still pretty bad. All that said it's not easy for them to made big changes to such popular games, if people don't like the change there goes the game and considering how 99% of people on the internet like to complain about any kind of change good or bad, it just makes it that much harder to change things rather than repackage it and get more money out of it.

Oops, this thread is kinda old but I'm always excited to rant about Far Cry. It wont hurt my feelings if you ignore me, lmao. Honestly, my biggest complaint about FC4 (and 3) is having to use Uplay. FC4 gold wasn't worth $90 but I have put in about 38 hours into and I believe I'll play it again sometime. If you liked FC3, then you'll like FC4 because they are super similar. Plus, the story is different of course. Although still a little weak IMO.
I, myself, invested over 100 hours into FC3 and I'm not really sure how I got so into it. I really got my expectations up for FC4, so I was a little disappointed, but I don't feel like I wasted my time on it. Ha, I'm also a little biased because it was a gift and I'm not the one that spent $90.
