Who is your favorite girl/lady from anime made before the year 2000.

Mine is Kasumi Tendo from Ranma 1/2 . Smart (she read's medical books for light reading), calm and very, very kind.

I can't possibly narrow this down to one candidate, so I'll offer a list in no particular order.

Misty (Pokemon)

Misty is the well-beloved short tank tsundere that is remembered fondly by Pokemon fans of all ages. The romantic subplot between Misty and lead protagonist Ash is still an object of intense focus over a decade later. That's got to be worth something. Misty is my second most favorite female member of Pokemon's main cast, and unfortunately my favorite (May) was introduced after the thread's cutoff date, so there you go.

Rei Ayanami and Asuka L. Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

These two characters have consistently ranked high on the popularity charts since they were first introduced to the world in the early-to-mid 1990s, becoming icons for one of the most lucrative anime franchises in history. Although Rei is commonly considered by critics to be bland and uninteresting and Asuka's harsh demeanor seems to evoke mixed results once its origin is revealed, I am among the camp which considers Rei's evolution as a character over the years to be the real thing to focus on in her case and which resonated with Asuka's harshness and unhappiness from the beginning.

Lucrezia Noin (Mobile Suit Gundam Wing)

Lucrezia Noin is a capable and competent mobile suit pilot whose outlook on the world I find somewhat sympathetic (if ultimately a bit too idealistic) and whose dedication to her troops I find admirable. Noin doesn't hesitate to put her own life on the line, she leads by example, she stands for what she believes in no matter what, what's not to like?

Haruka Tenou/Sailor Uranus and Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune (Sailor Moon S, Super S, Stars)

Haruka and Michiru portray the inner struggle that good people always dread: having to choose between doing something evil to promote a greater good or refusing and sacrificing the greater good for the momentary good. They face this challenge two times over the course of the series at large, and both times they choose the greater good over the momentary good. They have been criticized for their recklessness and cold, calculating outlook, but in my opinion they make this outlook more sympathetic by being equally cold and calculating toward the value of their own lives. I would further argue that their making quick decisions under pressure doesn't represent recklessness, but rather decisiveness and preparedness to act.

Ami and Minako seem like people I could be friends with, but it's Haruka and Michiru that I admire. Also, they're a positive portrayal of lesbians in a time when lesbians were either negatively portrayed or excluded entirely (the North American dub tried this on them too, though).

Nabiki Tendo (Ranma 1/2)

Nabiki Tendo is a con artist, blackmailer, extortionist, paparazzi, the list goes on. It's not Nabiki's straight-pointing moral compass which makes her worthwhile; it's her cleverness and wit. Able to determine the path to profit in a split second, to negotiate favorable terms for herself with a mastery which would make both seasoned diplomats and businesspersons alike turn green with envy, to determine peoples' motives with a mere glance at them and size up their entire personalities in half that time, and to capitalize on her beauty to the maximum extent possible, Nabiki Tendo exudes an aura of intelligence and pride which makes her irresistibly charming. Another thing to consider is that while Nabiki is more than willing to squeeze anyone for their last 10 yen coin she does seem to genuinely care for Ranma and her family. She clearly misses her deceased mother, she expresses concern for Akane's welfare when things get too serious, Nabiki shows a more noble side from time to time. She even comes to her family's defense against a con artist in a brief arc.

I could just keep going, but this seems enough to start a conversation with.

Yes, her and Kozue as well. And Akemi. And Ichinose. That anime/manga had a really great female cast.

In my opinion, Maison Ikkoku is the greatest romance manga of all time. So realistic and completely relatable while being very funny, yet very touching. A masterpiece. To be honest, my favorite in that series is Godai.

I'm happy that in Japan they still rated it as the greatest romance of all time, even against new series. MI dominated in everything

If you are talking '80s anime, then, for me, there is only Haman-sama (Zeta Gundam & Gundam ZZ).

But it is true that there are many choices for pre-2000 anime.

I'm using Rei Ayanami for a different thread, so Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road
