As the title suggests, what anime is something you keep watching despite how much you hate it?

For me, Sword Art Online.

I can't stand it for hundreds (literally) of reasons, and that, in and of itself, is almost the reason I can't stop watching it. I'm hooked like watching an ongoing train wreck. The fact that hundreds of thousands of people consider it "exceptional" or "quality" spurs me on to watch in horror.

So, what about you? What do you love to hate/hate to love?

Haha. That's not surprising, really.

It wasn't until SAO that I have ever felt this way about an anime. If I hated something, I would normally drop it.

This obsession is probably largely due to the clamor and praise that gets thrown on this show. I had never heard of it before I stumbled across it, and watched more than 3/4 of the way into season 1 during its original airing, and after having watched all of the series, I was someone aghast that, despite my hopes, it didn't get better. It got much, much worse.

Then, to hear others talk about it, its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

How can anyone reconcile the shallow character designs, the superficial relationships, the fact that male and female, everyone is literally a writing tool to make the MC be more badass than everyone around him? Its literally a harem, with a backdrop masquerading as a video game, but is actually a sheet with a "fantasy" picture slapped on it.

There were some cool concepts going on in the show, but they were never realized, as that would have detracted away from the harem angle, and maybe made the story deep.

The show has so many episodes where there is literally 10+ minutes of exposition. There are dozens of scenes explicitly set up so that everyone looks inept and the MC looks #SWAG.

SO... I keep watching. So I know what anime can do wrong, define what is bad about the show, and don't have to hear about how cool it is from people without any sort of criteria for which shows they do or don't watch besides "durrr action scenes. PURTY girl!" and "but its a luv story!" and can refute the claims that it is actually good.

Nobody cares about someone's uninformed opinion on any subject, especially when it concerns something they adore. So being up-to-date on the source material goes a long way.

Those are just a few of my justifications for this particular series, but honestly, I made the topic so I could hear about others' infatuation with a series for negative reasons, not really to rag on mine.

If nothing else, hopefully the extra context rouses some responses! ^-^

I'm with the guy who doesn't understand you.

Right after the Alfheim arc, I've been pissing on SAO and I've been avoiding it with all my heart.
I never continue to watch any anime that doesnt catch my liking, its just not my thing.

No game no life
Arcana famiglia
Diabolik lovers
Say I love you

I think these animes have so much potential, however the characters and dialogues are too one dimensional. I watched till the end to see if things improve, but they don't. So they get bad ratings from me.

Ah, I might be with you on No Game, No Life, except that its presentation is quite aesthetically pleasing to me, and the actual "battles" are quite imaginative and complex. Like, materialization Shiritori. Very impressive. Also, it doesn't take itself super seriously in the way I feel SAO does, so it doesn't get criticized as harshly from me. I would never champion it, but I don't think its bad.

The dialogue is sometimes haughty, and that really grates on a viewer. Comes across as grandstanding by the author, due to an unreliable narrator, and then the reveal is crucial information the viewer was ignorant of. Some of it can be justifiably explained away, but its too recurring for my tastes. Also, I've never enjoyed harems, in any form, even when they're supposed to be comedic.

(one excepton, as of episode 06 of When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace. That show is cutesy, and I don't normally get into slice of life, high school life, harems, or any of that, but something about it...)

Thought of another series I know is bad, but I watched to completion: Bleach.

Had some of the greatest presentation, had so much potential, squandered all of it, and by the end of the anime, there was literally nothing but fanservice. What is life?

It's not just that, for an anime about "games", the games are too simple... Like poker, Rock Paper Scissors? Coin flip :/ and the outcomes are always the same... So it got predictable fast.

But I agree on the presentation, it is stunning.

Sword Art Online counts for me, as well.
Although there were a few times I almost dropped it during the Gun Gale Online arc because a couple episodes almost put me to sleep...
Other than that, though, SAO is a series where I don't particularly care for the characters, or the story beyond the first arc, but I keep watching.... I dunno, maybe I'm just curious about where it's trying to go, or maybe it's because it always manages to entertain me somehow (save for those exceptions I mentioned for GGO).

As for other shows that I hate but sat through completely:
Diabolik Lovers
Amnesia
Brothers' Conflict

The female leads were just...terrible. Every single one of them. Incapable of doing anything. I dunno, they managed to entertain me by making me appalled, if that makes any sense... Or maybe a better analogy would be "an accident that you just can't look away from."
I got a lot of laughs from these series just because of how ridiculous they became sometimes.

And the first show I remember watching despite thinking how terrible it was is School Days...

Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan lies squarely in "So Bad It's Good" territory, if that counts.

Something about SAO just puts me in a box. At first, there was a lot of progression with the characters but as soon as Kirito turns into a detective, I felt like I skipped 10 episodes.

I'd have to go with SAO too. I kept watching through the entire Alfheim Online arc waiting for it to become interesting, but then I find out practically everyone hated that part anyway, the only bit I liked about it was the villain. It also caused me to drop SAO Season 2 as well. I felt it was slow, but the world of GGO was sort of interesting to me, then they returned to Alfheim and I gave it a couple of episodes then thought 'Fuck it, it's not even worth it'.

I remember doing this for Amnesia and Glasslip, but because I was waiting for it to get good, and then it got to a point when I just wanted to finish it so I could cross it off on the list of anime I was interested in watching. Another one was Aku no Hana, but only because I hated the characters and the actions they took, the show overall was a really good psychological anime. I tried doing this for Serial Experiments Lain, but I wasn't in the right mindset to finish it, so I'll give it a whirl when I'm ready to pick apart my brain again.

Pretty sure there were more, but these were the first ones to come to my head.
