Being addicted to the internet means prioritizing it over many other RL-possibilities, in my opinion. So if ur friends ask you to go out with them and u have to make up an excuse for staying at home and spending time in the internet, maybe with other people u merely know, instead of going out with them i guess u might be addicted. On the other hand if u have friends u can spend much time with in RL i guess its a great way to stay in contact with them, even if u spend a lot of time online then. So u have to ask urself why u spend so much time online, because of good personal reasons or because of some nonsense games or entertaining websites in general.

I probably am, but I really enjoy it and it has yet to be of any major detriment to my life so I'm not too bothered about it. It might become a problem when/if I get a job, but until then...

Yes, it can happen. People can be addicted to all sorts of things (My Strange Addiction, anyone?). Yes, it's arguably down-played. No, I'm not addicted. For me, the Internet is merely a convenient source of entertainment that I began favoring over many other sources. Why? Because the Internet is generally more multi-purpose and convenient. Without it, I simply turn my attention to my former favorites. With or without the Internet, I'd be wasting time on entertainment and mostly keeping to myself. I don't see much of a difference between doing so online, or via other sources, like books, cooking, amusement parks, video games, day-dreaming, drawing, RPing, etc...

The most significant, most noble of pursuits. *high five*

On subject! I don't think I'm addicted to the internet specifically. I think it's just the easiest outlet for directing my attention. I've never been able to look people in the eye, and I can't stand being in a room with more than 3 people at once, not including myself. If the internet didn't exist, if TV didn't exist---If nothing BUT socializing was a form of entertainment, you know what I'd be doing? Sitting in my room by myself, probably day dreaming about a way to talk to people all over the world anonymously.

Some people are just wired to prefer indirect interactions. I can talk to people through a door no problem, but as soon as I see a face, I get anxious and tense. I lose a lot of my ability to speak coherently and express my thoughts clearly. The internet provides both social interactions and a nigh limitless amount of entertainment and educational options from cultures entirely different from my own.

Err... To answer the question, I think it's a case by case thing.

My opinion? Yes. It's downplayed too much. I recently discovered i am addicted, and this has been a serious problem for a long time. However, in the past, whenever anyone had mentioned it, it was more used as an insult rather than mentioning it as a genuine problem.

I love instagram and youtube but not as much as playing old game boy color or GBA games on my android.

I started using the internet when I discovered that I was addicted to real life.

A major problem. It can detract you from reality itself and start to overwhelm your actual life outside of it. Case in point, I became so affected and upset by events and arguments that occurred on the internet that I relapsed my self multiation habit and took my keys to my fucking wrists.

I only play 13 hours a day on my computer. Totally not a addiction nor a downplayer.

I don't think strict addition to the internet is necessarily a thing. While the purest sense of the word indicates a type of dependence, and we as a society do depend on the internet immensely, an addiction would indicate that your biological functions, mental faculties, physiological state, and emotions would be adversely affected without it.

Addiction would likely come from the density of information acquired from the internet, or in cases that are seeing studies, social networking binges. If you were in fact addicted to the "internet," then interstate drives would kill you if you weren't driven insane.

Everyones got something they like to do. Why does it have to be bad? I think we over lable
people and their personal habits and choices. Now a days everything has an addiction or
is labled a disease/affliction. Also whats up with "better living through pharmaceuticals" ?

I use the internet at home as my primary entertainment/news source so end up using it alot.
When I'm at work though I don't use it at all 12 hours a day 5 days a week. I also don't really
like smart phones so still just got an older phone with no internet(the way I like it). Its your
life live it how you want. Don't let others define who you are.

I admit I sadly waste a huge amount of time on the internet, and it may very well be an addiction.

yes i think its been downplayed also i find that keeping busy from things off the internet would help ppl with internet addictions. Like for example sports, going out with friends more, getting a job, walking your dog, trying to achieve your dream of being basketball player, comedian, actor. idk. finding people who don't use the internet much will help. Change of enviroment possibly too
