So, Crunchy:

I hear you've been talking about science lately. I hear you think that it is awful that science is held back and underfunded. I hear you think it's awful that science is now more about politics than about physics. But whatcha gone do about it, Crunchy?

What amount of public funding (for example, as a % of GDP) should be spent on science? What areas of science deserve public funding, it any?

With public-private partnerships, should private companies retain patents over discoveries or inventions?

What do you see as the role of science in society and government, and what do you view as the public understanding of science?

Are there any ethical problems with genetically engineering catgirls? What about foxboys? Dat Koukurri-san........

I don't know, but I do know this:

Before this decade is out, we should resolve to put a catgirl on a moonbabe!

Hmmm.... I'd probably take about 45% out of the military defense budget and diversify it into projects that include:

1. biologically produced energy - from biofuels (including carbon cycling with biochar, but honestly, I think it's better for sequestering excess carbon) to solar cells that replicate the photosynthetic process.

2. terraforming - how might it be accomplished on our two nearest planets, but also here on earth, though I guess that would be more along the lines of

3. rebuilding ecosystems. The oceans are quickly becoming depopulted. Forests are disappearing. Even if it just means ramping up the efforts to plant more trees and other plants, you need to know what sort of ecosystem you are tryng to rebuild and the best way to recreate that... But to do that, perhaps we need better

4. urban planning and reducing the acreage used by human populations.

5. integrated agriculture - permaculture, developing ecosystems where multiple parts can be used for multiple purposes (have always been fascinated by this when I learned about rice farmers also raising ducks, which feed on the insects that prey upon the rice, but also double as another "crop". which goes beyond just integrated pest management see here: http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/165782/2/AJAD_2005_2_1%262_7Hossain.pdfcurrently trying to play with it a bit by introducing food crop mushrooms to grow on walkway spaces filled with wood chips, which act as weed suppressant, and in plots as a particular variety fights nematodes, composts organic material and is edible) and increasing urban "greening" via rooftop gardens, green walls for water filtration and insulation

6. waste recycling - upgrade out current shitty "recycling" (i've recently learned how little actually gets recycled. it's absolutely gut wrenching, and it's NOT due to people tossing their recyclables in the trash. It's because china just doesn't want the materials anymore, and the industries in the US refuse to buy our own "trash"), by doing away with recycling for a TRUE single stream system that better strips away metals, plastics, glass, and organic matter, and separates them.) and uses composting (breaking down that organic matter I just mentioned) and selling the composted material as soil while bottling and selling the methane produced for fuel, and capturing the heat generated in the process for energy. We also need to work on....

5. bio-engineering bacteria to break down plastics into gasoline more efficiently. Seriously. Plastic is EVERYWHERE. I'm not a huge fan of gasoline, but I'd take just about anything to get rid of the giant swathes of plastic If the plastic goes, it makes it a lot easier to work on the other projects.

6. organic chemistry in general - carbon is an AMAZING substance. Combined with oxygen and hydrogen, it's the basis of life. And while we're learning to use botany and biology to deal with a lot of the above issues, the chemicals these plants and animals and fungi produce, there's probably going to be a whole bunch of unforseen needs (such as packaging and a replacement for standard plastics), which organic chem is probably the best place to find an answer.

So... maybe not cat girls per se, but we really need to study life, both its building block and its world spanning architecture, if we want to make a better future.

Why not? I would actually like to be a cat-girl. My boyfriend has a fetish for them. Nyan nyan.

Mega Man, I'm getting the sense that people don't want to talk about public finance, patent law, the role of science in society, the ethics of genetic engineering, and perceptions of science in society at large. Well, except for Loomy (kinda).

I'm all for cat girls I'd I can get my wolf guy. Or kitsune guy. Not really picky here.

Only if we could genetically engineer their personalities too. I wouldn't want a felinism movement to ban catgirls in anime.

Yea but if we do that then people will start making catnip scented condoms. But that could work.
