Disappointment!?

You got to be kidding! It's the best show of the season! 10/10 so far. Seriously, I prefer the animation style over Fate/Stay Night's. It just feels more homey.

Havn't read the whole thread yet, will get to it in the morning.

To share my opinion, the New studio is rather unwieldy.

Deen is incidentally far more experienced in fight scenes, and by god do they look amazing this season. The fighting choreography and actual animation really goes a long way. It's above this Season's Fate/Stay Night and even above Parasyte for the best fight scenes. That said, it's got a large dearth of fighting in the slower portions.

Speaking of, Deen has a huge quality control problem. Talking and general nonsense scenes are poorly animated. The characters constantly go off model and it's easily the worst thing about the entire Season. Instead of resorting to Chibi-joke's for low budget scenes, they just draw dead lifeless faces with little to no emotion whatsoever. It's an insultingly bad practice and they should get a lot of hate for it.

As far as the season goes, I'm enjoying it. I ignored 2 week's of episodes, but Episode 8 really picked up again, and I had a lot of fun in the development of a horrible yet now developed and slightly better character.

After losing interest from the start of the season immediately, I'm happy that the last 2 weeks finally gave us a direction. As said before, Akatsuki needed some character development, even if it didn't actually show until the last 2 episodes of this arc, and it felt arduous to get there.

That being said, I think this could have been averted by having cuts over to Shiroe's raid to keep it from getting stale. Seeing as how it looks like we're going to go back in time to catch up to what they were doing while the trouble in town was being dealt with.

I really need to go back and rewatch .Hack. I remember liking it, but I also remembered it bored some people with all the philosophy talk.

.Hack/Sign <- philosophy + escapism
Log Horizon <- politics/economics + game mechanics
SAO <- teenage fears and fantasies

Have you seen what they've done to Nyanta's face? I think they sort of deserve some of the hate.

It's different and in some scenes it looks really bizarre, but I'm always left with the fact that people had pre-decided, and I hate that ><

Honestly, I like philosophical shows, but I found .hack to be a bit of 'sound and fury signifying nothing'. All that talk and no meaning >> 'course I was in a weird place when I watched it, and I haven't gone back either.

To go back to the OP, nobody should be surprised and dissapointed by what we got in LH Season 2. It's exactly what would be expected from season 1, and it wasn't even remotely a secret or surprise that Ataksuki was going to be a focus early in the season.

Its the same show, covers the same themes, and does it in the same narrative style. The only change is a small shift in the visual style, and while I'm not a fan of it myself, it's not exactly an atrocity either.

There are two things that bother me this season. First is the change in art style, Lenessia and Marielle are not up to par with their season 1 counterparts. Secondly is that I have to wait each week since I've now caught up with everyone.

Season 2 doesn't really bother me. I've noticed plenty of people are upset with Akatsuki's character development but I'd rather have one that drags on instead of none at all. She was a bit too much in the sidelines in the previous season and I hope that the payoff from this will be that she'll be seeing more action in the future.
There are also certainly interesting plotpoints brought up this season. I'm excited to see how it will all work out.

Yeah, this also made me really upset. I liked the artwork for the characters in S1... most of them done by DEEN now look like ass.

At any rate, I'm actually enjoying S2 a lot more than S1. It has been a lot more cohesive of a story and gives long needed development to Akatsuki's character. I could do without the "love story" between her and Shiroe though. That just dilutes everything they are doing and cheapens it in my view.

There it is.

the LH vs SAO debate is about to start.

Again....... great.

The problem is that it's such an apt comparison.

They're 2 shows with purportedly the same theming but entirely different approaches.

.Hack is too good to compare :p

Fixed that for ya.

I have probably rewatched .hack//sign like 10 times over the last 12 years. Most recently last year. For me anyway it's not nostalgia goggles.

There are a few things that make each series special :

The thing that separates .hack from log horizon and sword art online are the characters.

All though this is just my opinion, both LH and SAO are very lousy at expressing their characters. The characters have depth to some extent, but that depth is still so shallow that you can grasp the entire character pretty much instantly.

In SAO the character development is almost non-existent, and in LH its very methodical and unnatural.

.hack// on the other hand has characters with complicated personalities, the characters may seem one way on the outside but are actually quite different on the inside and they have RL problems that they try to hide while they are in game. (Subaru being cripple, Bear having family trouble, etc.) But those problems start to seep through and slowly come to the surface as the story advances. LH and SAO on this account just tell you clearly right at the beginning what problems these characters have.

,hack// also has natural back and forth dialogue. It's more like the characters are discussing what to do and bouncing ideas off each other. Where SAO and LH are more like the characters are each taking turns reciting their lines.

On the other hand though, .hack// has a pretty cryptic plot which could be a good thing or a bad thing, it also has almost no action and the romance is pretty much non-existent as well.

Log Horizon has a great premise and great ideas about how a real world mmo might work, but it kind of sucks at expressing those ideas in a captivating fashion. Which is why people may think it's disappointing. It's like someone who stutters a lot trying to tell the best story in the world.

Sword Art Online on the other hand has lovable idealized character archetypes, great action, and pretty blatant romance. It's like a fluid speaker trying to convey the most cliche story world.

I have faith in this season to deliver the goods, though it is taking its time getting there. (I agree that the animation is shite under Deen, though.)

Thank you, Loki. You said what I was thinking.

My only nitpick about .hack is that, after all the anime, all the manga, all the games, one is still left looking for a resolution. It tells a great story, but where it is all supposed to go remains a mystery in many ways.

Yeah Lenessia is the most obviously different from S1-S2, the others are a lot better as compared to their S1 Counterparts. but it's not as bad as Date A Live----> Date A Live II, imo

Speaking of Studio DEEN, are they responsible for this?

Actually it's easily explainable. Kaname's Flashbacks are when she still played on the Japanese server, as a Swashbuckler. When the Apocalypse hit she had Changed Avatars and switched to Monk on the European Servers.

Ahh, icic. Dang, I was really liking the fact Log Horizon had barely any fanservice and now when Kanami is gonna show up again her bouncing boobs are gonna bother me.
