Which is harder to draw/create, shoujo or shounen?
Posted 6/28/07 , edited 6/28/07
A long while back I was a great drawer, could draw anything.....lost it all XP. I've been recently trying to regain my skill of drawing again but it has been very difficult. I'm just trying to draw simple anime characters and hopefully little by little I'll get regain my once formor glory. It's been about a month and I only retained somethings like shading and the simple stuff. One day I lost it and started wondering......is it the anime I'm trying to draw the problem for me? So which is easier to draw, Shojo or Shonen characters? Feel free to post your Shojo/Shonen pictures examples XD

P.S The picture I'm working on now is Miyako from PPGZ, a Shojo anime. XP

^ ^ ooh! You're trying to draw my avie. Ahaha!

Ah... wait a second, I remember you now... you were the one who wanted me to make you a gif avie. haha! (no stealing of my old avie, ya hear! )

Well, you could send me some of your works and I can comment on them. As for what's harder to draw, it really depends on the preference of the animator. I find it easier to draw Bishojo compared to anything else, so it really depends. :)

But if you want to get very objective about it, the more realistic your drawings, the harder it is since you can't "cheat" like you can with many of the other styles.

PFFT! I'm drawing Miyako from this

But every time I do it kinda comes out Shonenish......I CAN'T GET IT RIGHT! And I like perfection.....so anything too big of a difference will send me to insanity! I want to be a Shojo animator instead of a Shonen one.....XD

^ Sometimes, copying isn't everything. Show me your work and I'll comment on it. Don't you find it nice to know that you put your own style to things?

That's what I mean, I can't draw anything at the moment so I'm trying to retain somethings but just looking at it and drawing......I CAN'T GET PAST THE WASTE! And I don't trace just do you know....just hate it.....XD

^ you mean, waist? Yeah, I think I can understand your problem. I tried sketching Miyako after you brought this up, and I noticed the problem. There is an illusion that the waist seems small when you draw it because the belt is actually lower than it actually seems. In fact, when I try to put up a visual model, the belt rests on the upper hip and swings down to mid buttocks. If you want to get it right, you have to elongate the abdomen a bit so the body does not look too compressed. This slight deformation works well since the legs will be drawn long, and the overall effect is shoujo since the character's head is relatively large. :)

Hope these tips help.

^I kinda get it but up to the skirt/belt I always have the problem of getting the belt on their, i even took out the staff to make it more simpler. I know how it works but I can't seem to get it right. If you look at the left side of the belt it not really "gripped" on to her body, it's just hanging there since she not really standing straight, she's at an angle. I also have a problem with her hands.....for the most part the hands for me is the most difficult. I've tried drawing the hands only on a separate piece of paper but I always end up scratching my head and bitting my fingers. For me I think out of all three girls on that picture she is the hardest to draw. The other two's bodies are either at and angle left or right. Miyako's body is kinda angle forward and a little to the right. This picture will be the death of me.....XP

^ you'll have to get used to the belt. You're right, it's hanging there, so you have to make it look like it's gripping on the upper hip, while hanging loose on the buttocks (you'll only be able to do this once you get a very good visual image... you'll also have to think in 3D to get it right).

The hands are, naturally, the hardest bit, but these girls have something that makes it very easy to cheat... GLOVES! And to make things better, their gloves are black! Perfect! You can simplify almost everything now and get away with a lot of things. I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out. :D

Last tip: think 3D. That's the only way you'll get the proportions right.

3D huh? Well i can imagine somethings 3D but it's hard for some stuff. And i do agree the gloves help out a lot! Every time I look at a picture of try to draw it I just take everything piece by piece, sorta like taking everything apart and see how it should be drawn and how it's connected to the other parts and how it affects the picture entirely. And to mushroomjay's tip, I understand the concept of drawing it with lines and then slowly adding attributes to make it more life like......but I have no idea how to do what....XP

i would said in my opinion, i would say to create because it takes a while to think of what to draw

Well for me drawing anime is harder. First of all you have to follow how the picture is drawn. If you create anime it's easier because you can be creative and make it look like whatever you want it to look like. If you draw anime it has too look like what it's suppose to look like.....XDXDXD
