Since you said no hate I assume you're being serious so I will answer seriously. Anime is almost 100% of the time made for Japan and rarely is marketed to Western cultures. There are shows that exist that were for American audiences but they are far and few between.

All of them are made for Japanese. If an anime is made for Western audience, the script should be written in English, not in Japanese. They would also have to eliminate things like -san, -chan, etc as it is not suitable for a Western audience. And many cultural ideologies like younger people respecting older people... will have to be eliminated. As Western culture is different from Japanese culture. (I'm not saying Western people can't appreciate this, i'm just saying if they were made for a Western audience, they wouldn't include these things as it's not something the average Western person can identify with).

Rein in the sarcasm, self. Rein it in.

Alright. So, Japan is the primary market for anime by a mile, and although that may be partly because that's where it's made, the much more likely answer is because it's much more popular there. Correct me if I'm wrong, but although the worldwide market isn't completely irrelevant, anime companies look more closely at their domestic popularity and sales when determining whether their anime has been a sucess or not. Why? Because that's where their main market is.

If anime were as popular in western countries as they are in japan, we'd have more than a select few showing on TV.

^^ This. All of this.

"IT'S SHIT!" -- Podtaku

Seriously though, there are very few anime made with the West in mind. The local market comes first after all.

for example.

in crunchyroll only, how often do cr users get offended by the themes of incest, loli, echhi, harem, misogamy?

I believe if you take a tantamount of americans vs japanese. I would put an emphases that the japanese count would be less.

so, no.

Naturally it's more popular in its home country.
Though there are a very select few that became much more popular in the west (Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun)
Speaking of Trigun, its reception in the west is the reason why they made a movie later on.

Bienvenue sur CR, en passant!

It's more popular in Japan by a country mile, made by the Japanese for the Japanese. That's the way most Japanese things work, they're very focussed on what their own country's consumers want first, everyone else comes a very distant second.

The dude two post up there is right.

While American audience is hard to catch with anime even If it is of her own market, example the legend of korra which is good, was knocked off of broadcast. The popularity is less in America than in Japan, take for granted streets anime advertising and City halls founding anime like

Ai Tenchi Muyo! > city of Takahashi, Okayama
Or those town adverting Girs Und Panzer (I don`t remember wich one at the moment)

They even draw news headlines as anime time to times

So basically Anime is more popular in Japan that in America

It depends on what you mean by popular I guess. As a percentage of the whole of the United States, it is a lot lower here than in Japan where the percentage of viewers is higher. However, if we go by raw amounts of viewers in both countries, then I'd image they are pretty close if not the US having more simply because there are three times as many people living in the US than Japan.

But like others have said, Japanese anime is most certainly catered toward the Japanese audience by and large with very few exceptions.
