In my experience 30-50% of University students read manga in Japan.
About 5-8 percent of university students watch anime or read Light novels.

Edit: I exaggerated a bit.
It may be more like 50% vs 10-15% ish considering people might secretly watch anime because it has negative connotation.
I agree anime is much much popular in Japan than in US,but anime in Japan is not nearly as popular as manga in Japan which is huge and totally normal thing to do for university students.

OT, but I'm curious, why'd you name your account after a mobile game?

That's so weird, because fewer people read manga than watch anime over here.

I think it might be because Anime lose less charm than Manga when it is translated into other language.

I always thought we Americans were more accustomed to TV than reading.

It is interesting analysis of yours about american trait because it never occurred to me.But I can counter this way:american books or comics or novel are hardly popular in Japan but more visual media such as Movie,TV drama series are popular(especially movie are super popular)
The more language-centric,the more lost-in translation is my 2 cents

All I know is, less people read books on a regular basis than watch TV. This is of course the people I observe, but it seems fairly accurate. Reading takes more effort and comprehension than looking at moving pictures.

Obviously, it's more popular in Japan because it is made with the Japanese audience in mind. Not to mention, anime has a niche status in America, so it's pretty obvious what the answer is.

I didn't say it was, I was only expressing surprise that more people read manga than watched anime in Japan.

If we're talking about raw numbers then sure America may beat Japan after all America is much much larger than Japan but it doesn't really matter because it will still be produced for the Japanese audience. Why? Because it's the Japanese audience who pays more. Japanese buyers would buy expensive BDs of the series they love. OTOH it's no secret that a lot of the licensed shows are being sold much cheaper because foreign anime fans are nowhere as hardcore as the Japanese fans.

It is more popular in Japan probably. We have the power to make things like Watamote into an anime and occasionally they make anime targeted at America but Japan is where they see their target fanbase.

It's possible that overseas sales make more of a profit though.

Japan:
Has anime commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nngGGBkjMpU
Has anime cafes
Has Gundam statue
Has anime billboards
Has a doujinshi following
Has otaku pilgrimages (Saitama for Lucky Star and Haruhi for Kyoto)
Has Akihabara, Otome Road and Nihonbashi

Winner: Japan

It's more popular in Japan because it originated there and Americans look down on those who watch it thinking it's only for children.
A person in Japan is more likely to go to jail for downloading episodes of anime illegally than to commit insurance fraud.
So yeah, Japan.
