43 Students Disappear in Mexico
Posted 11/26/14 , edited 11/26/14
Okay so I am starting this thread because well, no one else has bothered to. I mean we have a thread discussing the Ferguson incident and rioting and I think this trumps that by a lot. I'm even wondering how many people have heard of this happening.

Here's a wiki page and an article to help give you an idea of what happened and what has been going on since:

https://news.vice.com/article/mexicos-missing-students-teachers-set-fire-to-iguala-town-hall-as-mayor-is-accused-of-ordering-attack

Short version for all you lazy people who don't want to read too much: 43 students disappear without a trace. They were seen being taken away by the police who eventually handed them off to a gang. What happened to them afterwards is unknown, but they are believed to have been killed. A mass grave with charred bodies was found, but the bodies ended up not matching any of the missing students. As a result of this incident, protests and riots have erupted in the country as a cry against the extreme corruption within the government and its connection to gangs and drug cartels that have been terrorizing the Mexican people.

This thread is a discussion of this issue. How do you feel about this and what do you think can be done to help the families of these victims?

I haven't even heard of this until now. It's really scary. why would they kidnap 43 students and how did they managed that- especially with the quantity of students. I feel shocked.

Well, I read the second article and this is what caught my attention:

The new group appeared to be taking advantage of the lack of police presence, and carried no signs or protest materials as the previous marchers did. They kept news photographers out as masked young men gathered in the central courtyard of the building and began methodically ransacking it.

Later, VICE News watched as the group boarded mini-buses and headed to a local mall, Plaza Tamarindos, where they proceeded to loot stores and businesses. A chain department store was the hardest hit, the looters taking off with large television sets and other electronic goods.

What. First they were protesting about the 43 students, for the government to take action and try and find them but then after they go and loot? ahhh. I know its not all of them but just some, but still? That's not helping the case.

Also, I think that the government should take a step up against them; the kidnappers. but yeah they ehhn.

I think what can be done to help the families of the victims is to reassure them that they will be found, or at least some sort of comfort towards them. so they don't panic and try to do anything drastic.

The scary thing is that they've been finding many mass graves while looking for the students.
It pains me seeing how messed my homeland is.

There's not much Americans can or will do for Mexico...we're too paralyzed by our internal divisions to be a really effective force for good in the world. Only an obvious/immediate threat to our own security (like the 9/11 attack) can bring us together as a nation, and we saw how long that lasted. It's a sad state of affairs.

If people stopped buying drugs then it would weaken the cartel by reducing some income. That ain't happening anytime soon though.
So legalizing marijuana would give them a good blow, maybe.

Unfortunately I'm ignorant on this subject, heavily ignorant on cartels and the way they work , the corruption of the Mexican government and most definitely ignorant on drugs.

I didn't say it was.

I just find it quite amusing how people are so up in arms about that and have no idea or care in the world about how much worse that same problem is just across the border.

To be honest, I really regret making the other thread because I honestly do not care and likely never will.

If you want to make a thread about other troubled countries, I suggest North Korea, Syria, Iran, and Ukraine.

I've heard of this and many other cases where people have been taken most likely murdered around the world. It is sad. I also don't believe there's anything I could personally do now or could have done to have prevented that from happening.
