Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace EP 1 "The Human Chair (Part 1)"

Another debut that surprised me Has that Psycho - Pass ( See Akechi below ) / Assassination Classroom feel ! BTW Assassination Classroom is also made by Lerche which is bringing us Monster Musume and School Live ! Not a big list but some good shows ( statred in 2011 )

OP / "Speed to Masatsu" (Speed and Friction) by amazarashi

ED / "Mikazuki" by Sayuri

Kobayashi is voiced by a Female VA XD Rie TAKAHASHI who is going to be in School Live / Gakkō Gurashi!

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=126148

Hashiba / Daiki YAMASHITA BYW made some apperances in Psycho - Pass and was Onoda in Y Pedal!

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=119386

Akechi / Takahiro SAKURAI Talk a great casting for this one He was Yuji in Eden of Grisia and Kunato in Knights of Sidonia but I was right he was Shogo Makishima in Psycho-Pass and he already great as Akechi!

I actually loved every minute of the first episode. It gave me the same chill I got from Higurashi and Psycho-pass. Anyone know what the song Akechi played on the phonograph was ? I saw mention above of the OP and ED but not the insert song.

Well this was quite interesting. Like everyone else I love the style decision of making everyone a silhouette until the MC gives enough fucks to notice them.

That being said it seems like this series will be doing EXTREMELY loose adaptations of Edogawa Ranpo's works, as his story The Human Chair is absolutely nothing like this episode. Like it didn't even have anything to do with hacking people up or turning people into chairs. Akechi did make a little wink, wink, nudge, nudge reference to the source story, though, but it is something that wouldn't be picked up by anyone that didn't know the original tale.

Well, it was described as "inspired by" rather than "based on". To me, that always means I can expect it to not actually be much like the original at all.

I loved every minute of this episode! The MC is adorable trap with a few screws loose. Kobayashi kind of reminds me of Nagisa (Assassination Classroom) and a little bit of Ciel (Black Butler). Akechi is a very interesting character.
The opening song and ending song are both amazing!!
And OMG the human chairs!! That reminded me of the real life serial killer Ed Gein!! Freaking creepy!!!

I'm glad Funi got this anime. If this anime gets a broadcast dub, they should get Brina Palencia (Ciel's English VA) or Lindsay Seidel (Nagisa's English VA) to voice Kobayashi! Please do it, Funi!!!

Well, call me hooked! Mystery/Horror show with some eccentric characters.

MC tricked me...TRICKED! TRAP! I changed my mind several times throughout the episode as to his/her gender, until they confirmed it. Dammit Nagisa Kobayashi.

The silhouettes were a genius ploy to save money

The late teacher's bod was pretty buff. Ironic that he ended up like his victims - chaired.

Love the art style in the ED.

First thoughts: Woah. It is so weird hearing Shogo Makishima as the detective.

Second thoughts: Honestly, the "human chairs" in this are oddly not nearly as creepy as the one in the original story.

Initial theory about the murder:

That's not what it was. To both of those points.

The silhouettes ONLY appear when we are looking to things from Kobayashi's point of view. Every single background character is perfectly animated when we are NOT (ex when we see the cop about to enter that classroom, background characters and him both are visible, or when we see Kobayashi's friend observe Kobayashi near detective's house, the girls in that area are n ot silhouettes). Kobayashi on other hand only "notices" those he deems interesting(hence why Teacher appears only after Kobayashi sees the scars on her wrists indicating a suicide attempt and why near the end when Akechi and Kobayashi are discussing the murderer's intentions Kobayashi's friend is only half visible)

Teacher was most certainly arranged to resemble a buddha statue, hence the punishment comments. The pose was meant to represent karmic justice catching up to someone:

The intent of this show is to reimagine those writings into a "modern" take.

Basically the same thing BBC did with Sherlock Holmes:

I see my meaning was lost in textual form with emote - I was only joking as I knew what the purpose of the silhouettes were doing (great touch), but it also does save money as a side effect, hence I said it was a "genius" ploy. I actually like it very much.

I seemed to visualize a chair with the body's upright arms as some weird armrest. I thought the killer was going for karma coming back for him, given that the teacher's victims were chaired as well.
The Buddha thing is probably the right interpretation though.

Not a fan of traps...

Kobayashi seems to have a good sense of deductive reasoning and Akechi looks like an interesting character, I mean, he loves canned coffee, why wouldn't he be? Hashiba is annoying though, extremely annoying.

Episode 1

Well this was an interesting episode! Very strange tone and the MC is a weirdie. Why the hell does he have to be a trap? I still don't believe it, I think he's a girl but is covering it up! They aren't doing a good job at trying to convince me that he's a boy though lmao. Even the promo image is putting emphasis on his butt!

DAMN YOU LERCHE! And is it only coincidence that they had two trap MCs in a row? First AssClass and now this.

Seriously though, I'm excited for more. I wonder where this will go.....

And Lerche's animation is excellent, I love their style.

Kita I'm impressed, this was actually a damn good analysis. I didn't even realize almost all these things so thanks for pointing that out. I'll make sure to pay more attention in the future, I was taking this anime too lightly....

I'm interested but think I like the premise more than the reality right now. My biggest issue is that it just didn't go weird enough. Maybe things will pick up as it goes on since this was part story and part introduction but it just felt so watered down from what it could have been. if you're going to do a show like this successfully you really have to jump off the deep end.

Well.. That might be intentional from his side. I mean we're getting some heavy hints that he is not exactly mentally well-adjusted.

The first ep was pretty awesome.

Had a Psycho-pass for the first crime for obvious reasons (corpse art)

The trap is cute xD

Me too, I expecting a bit more horror out of this. I mean, it's a horror title after all so maybe some creepy shit will come later, but for now I can live with how it presented things in this episode.

Also the OP and ED were damn good.

Ya definitely. He could be a girl and is trying to hide it for whatever reason. He definitely seems off and I wonder if his friend knows it too because he was getting flustered around him. Unless maybe he's just into traps

something I like in the ED animation:

It gives me some hope of the circle of history type thing in the story. Clearly, when main dude said something, pained detective remembered his friend saying the same thing. So this symbolism in the ED here, gives me a feeling of where this theme may go
