A long, long time ago, when gods ruled the lands.....

I pledge myself to thee.

There was one who dared defy them.

Take my soul and burn my mind.

A lone warrior. His home, his family, his loved ones....all claimed by the cruel gods.

Consume my flesh and drink my blood.

He who chose to forsake his humanity and lash out at those who would take everything from him.

All I ask of thee.....

The God Eater.....

Devour everything.......

RAGNAROK!

Nice as a promo! If that were the sort of thing I liked reading, it would make me interested in reading it.

Everything was ruin.

Deep, intense pain radiating from my torso. I didn't need to look down to see that the right side of my chest was caved in. I could feel my ribs digging into one of my lungs. I'd be coughing up blood if I had the strength to. I could barely manage to turn my head to the side, and forcing my eyes to take in the sight before me was even harder. All of it.....

Ruin.

Tyrus, our leader, was impaled, his body hanging against a tattered stone wall by a dazzling bright spear. Died instantly, I suppose, as it went right through his heart. His face....oddly serene. Didn't even have time to register what happened. Dumb guy.....but a good heart. Just wanted to make things better.

Why?

Nerene.....I don't even know what happened to her. I see her hand, with the diamond ring Tyrus gave her. The rest? Where's the rest.....oh. All that's left. Poor Nerene. At least she didn't have to see Tyrus like that.

Gods....

Syl. I don't see Syl. Need to find Syl.

Kill.

I try to turn my head the other way, but my body refuses to listen. I grind my teeth and command it to move, but nothing happens. Nothing at all.

KILL.

"Did you think this would end any other way?"

An unfamiliar voice breaks my concentration. I notice a shadow lingering over me, but I can't turn my head to look at the person casting it. I don't think I want to, if it looks like the shadow it casts. Monstrous shadow. No human looks like that.

"Did you think that you and your group could defeat the gods that rule over this world?"

I don't think the speaker is an enemy, as I can't sense any hostility in whatever it is. Definitely not a god. Would have killed me already.

"Silly of me.....you can't reply, can you? Frankly speaking....how are you even alive?"

What is it talking about? A crushed chest won't kill me instantly. A slower death awaits me instead.

"I see.....you don't notice it, do you? Let me show you..."

Whatever it is moves closer, reaches down. I'm too tired and wounded to feel fear, but I soon realize there is no need to. It picks up my head by my hair, forcing me to look down at my own body. What's left of it. The right part of my chest is indeed crushed in. But that isn't what matters....

"Do you see now?"

Gone. The rest of my body....all gone. I'd throw up at the grotesque situation if I still had a stomach. Indeed.....how was I still alive?

"Quite impressive that you can still retain conscious on top of clinging to life like that."

I'd agree with the creature if I could still talk.

"I wonder....what drives you, little human? I doubt such a feat would be possible without something driving you."

It forces me to face it. Worse than it's shadow, that's for sure. Skin as red as blood that seems to glow like fire. Horns that could gore a rampaging beast with ease. Bottomless eyes like the sea's abyss. I am forced to meet it's eyes, and at the same time I am forced to understand this creature just as it is forced to understand me.

"Hah. We have something in common, little human. Hatred."

My lips mouth the word yes.

"Do you want revenge?"

Obviously.

"What would you give for it?"

Anything.

"Your mind?"

Yes.

"Your heart?"

Yes.

"Your joy?"

Yes.

"Your....humanity?"

....Yes.

"Then take it."

It drops me roughly back on the ground, but I don't feel the pain. A clawed hand digs into it's own wrist, letting flow a rivulet of blood. It washes over me and I open my cracked lips to let it run into my mouth. I imagine it tastes like fire, but I have no idea what that would taste of. No....it doesn't taste like fire. It is fire. Burning what's left of my body. My vision blurs red and it feels like someone has shoved hot coals in my head.

"Struggle, little one. Struggle, and perhaps you will live."

The fire scorches my mind, making me unable to observe that the beast departs. It scorches me. It cleanses me. It corrupts me. I am so absorbed in the pain that I don't even notice a renewed sensation in the lower half of my body. All I am at the moment is the fire. A fire that strips you bare of everything that you are before consuming you whole. It is then that I am unable to maintain my awareness. Everything burns, and everything goes dark.

Era of the Gods - Year 231

The destruction of the Humanity Coalition was at hand, with a final assault by the deities of the land being launched against their last stronghold. All other pockets of human resistance had either been stomped out or driven underground. Permanently, most likely. Humans from every kingdom and land banded together to resist their holy overlords. Banded together. Scattered apart.

The assault was quick and brutal. The Lightbringer threw his spear to mark the beginning of the battle. The massacre. The spear blew through the outer gate of the human stronghold, ripping apart the first human it met and nailing the next one against a wall. A few standing near by readied to battle, a woman and a man. The woman prepared to cast a spell and the man's sword hissed as it was pulled out of its sheath. Neither were of any help as the Lightbringer threw more of his golden spears. The magic shield thrown up around the woman was easily shattered, and the man's entire lower half was blown out from under him.

The rest isn't even worth mentioning. All the humans in the hold were slaughtered, and the few gods who had decided to participate were quickly growing bored before even an hour had passed.

What is of note is what comes next. After the gods had moved away from the decimated human stronghold, leaving as quickly as they came.

-GOD EATER.-

It was darkness.

The Lightbringer was first to notice, throwing up a wall of radiant light to defend against the attack. One of his golden spears, left as a warning at the human stronghold, slammed against it right afterward. But it wasn't quite his spear anymore. The once bright spear had cracks running through it, black ooze leaking from them.

It was evil.

The others looked back in surprise, and what they saw shocked them. The Lightbringer's face was as impassive as stone, but his golden eyes betrayed his real emotions. It had appeared out of nowhere, with no warning or presence. If it weren't for the whistling of the spear in flight, even he wouldn't have noticed until it were too late.

An amalgam of the fear, of the anger, of the hatred that all humanity bears.

It was as if the darkness itself had decided to take the form of a human and walk around. Writhing, crawling, squirming shadows layered on top of one another like a bundle of snakes. Instead of eyes it had glowing holes like the pits of hell. Its heart, or a parody of such, was visible at times through the gaps in the shadows. It throbbed and thrummed like a heart, sure enough, but its color and texture looked more like bone than flesh. A long, slender, serpentine tongue slipped through the snake-like shadows, and one could imagine a smile in there somewhere, mocking those in front of it.

A curse. A living, breathing curse. A curse to all gods.

"What are y-" The Lightbringer's question was cut off by its next move. It slammed itself head first into the light barrier, moving faster than the human eye could track. Again and again, it slammed itself into the barrier. No logic. No finesse. No subtly. Once. Twice. Thrice. Brutally and savagely battering against the barrier with its own body. It kept doing this to the amusement of the gods with the Lightbringer. They were surprised by this simpleton?

Of course, until it learned.

It stopped after the second dozenth or so time, realizing that no progress was being made. It started running it's hands across the barrier instead. Lovingly stroking it, and then roughly groping. Finally, it seemed to be satisfied with a certain point and jammed both its hands at the same spot. The knuckles of the creature sank a few inches through the light, breaching it ever so slightly. The Lightbringer readied one of his infinite light-spears, readying to throw it by the time the other gods realized what was happening now. Too late by then, as it had already torn through the barrier.

The Lightbringer's spear didn't even graze it. It was too fast, even for a god's reflexes. A reverse of the massacre that had occurred earlier in the day.

The first was a minor god of conflict who was directly behind the Lightbringer, who had dodged the creature's first blow. Its shadowy hand elongated, piercing through the god with ease. The serpent-like shadows surrounding the creature swarmed the god, covering it whole. A brief scream, and then not another peep. There was nothing left of the deity.

The second came to it willingly, swinging a massive battle-ax down on its head. The ax rent the creature in half, sending shadows flying all over to latch onto those nearby. They ate at the gods they touched, consuming whatever divine flesh it could grab onto. The wielder of the ax, having been the closest, was hit with the most. The battle-ax fell heavily to the ground as the creature reassembled itself in the place of its owner.

Soon enough, all that was left was the creature and the Lightbringer. Not a scratch on him, but that is to be expected. He was the strongest of the group. There was no way he'd gone down as easily.

No wonder they stomped on us like ants.

For the first time in my life, if I could still be considered as alive, I can understand what the gods were thinking all along. Why they thought so lowly of humans. Why wouldn't they? All this power flowing through them. Through me. Humans? Elves? Dwarves? Who cares about them? Such lowly creatures could never stand up against this kind of power!

No, not just them. Not even gods could stand against this power. Even they are ants to me now. Nothing can defeat me like this. NOTHING!

"Hahahah. I'm unstoppable."

~~~~~
"Hahahah. I'm unstoppable."
For the first time since the assault started, the black creature talked. The Lightbringer wasn't surprised by the words so much as how they sounded. They seemed to worm their way into his brain, crawling through his ears and squirming inside his head. It nauseated him to listen to the creature speak, as if the words alone were something terribly wrong.
It wasn't the words, however. It was the creature itself. Its very existence seemed to go against the very nature of the world, sowing discord with every step it took and every word it spake. It defied reality itself and waged war with merely its breath, and it was then that the Lightbringer realized with a chill down his spine. It wouldn't stop. It would never stop. Not until every single creature that could be called 'god' was killed by its own hands.
He roared at the beast, launching spear after spear of light at it. He refused to accept such a thing! He refused to accept its very existence! He would deny the creature with his dying breath if need be.
Which was exactly what the monster wanted.
"Graaaah!" The Lightbringer yelled, looking down in astonishment at where his left arm was. Where it was supposed to be. Nothing extended past his elbow as it should, liquid gold dripping down to the ground from the fresh stump that was once his arm. He couldn't believe this. He had never been injured before now. What made this thing so different from his past opponents?
"Delicious." This one word brought the Lightbringer out of his shock, and his face was one of disbelief as he looked up at the monster. It was eating his arm.
"What....are you?"
The creature grinned at it, or appeared to. A mocking, condescending grin.
"God Eater."
