Don't forget that a haiku is 5-7-5 syllables according to Japanese pronunciation. For example:

みんなさん、 Minna- san, Everyone,
どうぞよろしく Douzo yoroshiku. Pleased to meet you.
「イチ」ですよ。 ”Ichi" desu yo. I'm "Ichi".

Here's a syllable count in case you're confused:

Mi n na sa n = 5
Do u zo yo ro shi ku = 7
I chi de su yo. = 5

Your haiku can be about anything as long as it's PG-13! So feel free to share as many haiku with us as you want!

This used to be a weekly haiku contest thread, however since I am busy, the weekly haiku contest is no more. However, the archive of previous winning haiku entries can be found here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/group/Japanese_Language_Club/pages/Haiku_Winners

Thank you everyone for all your participation!

Omoshiroi, Omoshiroi! This is an interesting contest. I'll be looking forward to some haikus! I'll probably give it a try later. :>

Now I need to change it.
Thanks for telling me!

Do the Japanese use numbers like this?

一, 二, 三 etc.?

Hai, sou desu. However that is, I believe, the Kanji form of counting. The most basic form of writing in Japanese is Hiragana. You can find many Hiragana tables online to memorize them, they are fairly easy to remember! You should give it a try learning how to write in Hiragana. That could be very useful ^^

I really like the dialogue that has been going on in here so far! But there are hardly any haiku here! You can submit as many haiku as you want during the weekly periods but only one will be a winner! So come on! みんなさんがんばって、ね。

日本語は
大むずかしい
でも好きよ

にほんごは

Japanese can be
Incredibly difficult
But I love it - yo!

I've taken liberties with the translation so the form holds in English, hope you don't mind!
I love haiku, I recently won a prize in a haiku contest right here on crunchyroll!

すごい。すごい。It wasn't even a requirement to make the English translation into a haiku, but I love how you did that!!! And that's amazing you won a haiku contest..(If you don't mind me asking, what did you win? The only Crunchyroll contest I won was cosplaying a pumpkin

Eheheh. I won a 30-day membership for the most 'meta' haiku.
You can see it on the winners announcement of the Halloween contest here:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-872201/spooktacular-weenies-halloween-contests-winners-announced
which - I just noticed - also contains your すごく かわいい pumpkin (Congrats!).

That's awesome, congrats on your win! I also entered the haiku contest, but didn't win that one. My haiku was inspired by the Romantic movement and Hellsing. I'll paste it here if you want to read it:

Enchanting blood moon
Crimson shadows everywhere
Fangs sink into necks

And aww thanks! I was sad when I had to throw away my かわいい pumpkin I really like both your haiku though!

This week's haiku contest winner is....Cloud san!

Here is his haiku. I love it for its simplicity and straight-forward message. Also, I love it how he translated the particle よ into the English slang "yo"
