This week's haiku contest winner is....Cloud san!

Here is his haiku. I love it for its simplicity and straight-forward message. Also, I love it how he translated the particle よ into the English slang "yo"

Wooohooo!
Ah-ha, glad you appreciate my laziness - I mean - genius.
Here's to more haiku next week!

Since no one seems to be participating in this thread, I'm going to keep Cloud-san's haiku up on the main page indefinitely until someone writes a haiku to challenge him. So come on people, we have over 50 members but only a few participate

Seriously folks, if you all don't start posting your own haiku, I'm just going to make more ridiculous ones. Come on!

That haiku of yours literally made me "lol" And I know, it's so disheartening. We have now almost 60 members and less than a handful regularly participate! It makes me sad that so few are participating since I created this club with the hope that there would be a lot of interacting going on, and a lot of people learning from each other!

You may call it ridiculous but there actually were poets who created serious (I mean it) haiku like that. Take Matsuo Bashou and his haiku about Matsushima. It goes like this:

Matsushima ah!
A-ah, Matsushima, ah!
Matsushima, ah!

Just saying you shouldn't depreciate your work, no matter how absurd it seems Anyway, yeah, it's sort of sad to see just a couple of people contributing to the forums like you do, guys. I never gave it a go before but I might think of some haiku in the future so as not to let this thread die I only hope it doesn't go horribly wrong

Oh, I take ridiculousness very seriously. And I now have a new favourite haiku, thanks!
Please do come up with some haiku! I'm sure it won't go horribly wrong...probably. I mean, it'll be fine...right?

And remember everyone, if you're stuck for a last line, you can always just take a leaf out of Yuuko's book and use '最上川' : http://anime.stackexchange.com/questions/5904/why-do-yukos-poems-always-end-in-mogami-river

That really is an awesome haiku--the one about Matsushima! Many people would regard the excess reputation as nonsense, but I find it both funny (not in a bad way) and interesting!

And Cloud-san I never heard of that "Mogami River" haiku ending before, thanks for mentioning it! I love learning fro you guys 2525! Also, it would be awesome to see an haiku contest special edition: Cliud-san vs Satz-senpai!! Oh yeah, I wonder who would win!!!

Challenge accepted (jk)

I suck at writing poetry in general - too bad my classmate's not here. Her haiku are always so funny and witty at the same time that I often wonder how she manages to do that (of course they're in Polish and there are lots of inside jokes).

Anyway, here goes:

Confusion
Just what is this thing?
And what is that thing? I just
Do not understand

Sun
This thing in the sky
That's glittering so brightly
I somehow hate it

Thoughts about Japanese language
Kanji is, you see,
Difficult – Nevertheless
I will not give up

The English translations that follow are not 100% precise, I had to readjust them so that the number of syllables is 5-7-5 as well.

I'll think of something better next time (m;_ _)m

Ooooh, this is more like it! You're spoiled for choice now, 一番先生!
*ahem*

Based on a true story:

プレゼント?
おともだちから
ぼんさいだ!

Is this a present?
From a good old friend of mine
It's a bonsai tree!

Haiku in two parts about Christmas: (also based on a true story!)

It must be Christmas
My family are being
kind of annoying

Ah! Nevertheless
It is Christmas, isn't it?
I love them really.

As usual, played around with the translation a little in order to get those pesky English words to fit properly!

I want to first thank everyone for their amazing Haiku!! You guys are the best!!! I had a really hard time choosing this week's winner. So I'm gonna announce three winners here, but only the first place winner will have the honor of having his/her haiku placed on the main page!

Third place is Cloud-san's Haiku about Christmas:

クリスマス
かぞくはすこし
うるさいね?

あ!それでも
クリスマスだね
じつは:すき

It must be Christmas
My family are being
kind of annoying

Ah! Nevertheless
It is Christmas, isn't it?
I love them really.

I love it how we can all relate to the experience he described here. My family cane boring at times too during any holiday, but despite the dull holidays, I love them! Thanks for a great haiku Cloud-san!

Second place is senpai's poem about the sun:

太陽
そらにある
きらしてるもん
なぜかいや

Sun
This thing in the sky
That's glittering so brightly
I somehow hate it

I love this poem because it sounds like something other a vampire would say (I'm in the vampire mood since I'm finishing the Vampire Knight manga series tonight). Anyways I love his his Haiku describes the sun. Normally, the sun, or light, are usually is a symbols of hope, new life, etc., but I absolutely love the last line of his haiku, describing his dislike of the sun!

And finally...this week's winner is....

Applestash's Haiku:

Almond
Almond
Very delicious
Tastes like Zen

I love its simplicity because through so little words, it conveys the joy one feels while eating a simple snack, the almond! This haiku is just beautiful and the last line, comparing the almond's taste to the bliss of zen really made this haiku stand out to me!

As always manna-san! Thanks for the great poems!!! I look forward to next week

I'm trying to get into the habit of using 季語. There are some nice ones related to New Year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigo#New_year

Mutter to myself:
"What year is it now again?"
First laugh of the year

Happy New Year everyone!
