Do you guys have the same feeling as I do? That is, no matter what sort of hopes you or resolutions had for the year 2015 - somehow, you feel even lazier than usual? I know I do T_T

Have a haiku anyway:

遅れた年賀状
けんこうや
よろこびなどを
みなさんに

Late New Year's Card
I would like to wish
Health, happiness, and so on
To all of you here

Yay senpai, thanks for your haiku! I'll be announcing the winner tomorrow~ And to answer your question, I feel bittersweet--the start of the New Year means the end of another year we'll never get back. Like I remember when it was 2005 and now we're in 2015! Like...wow! Time goes by too fast!

This week's winner is....Cloud-san!!

Mutter to myself:
"What year is it now again?"
First laugh of the year

It was a hard choice between his and senpai's haiku! The one thing that made Cloud-san's haiku really stand out was his use of kigo (the first new year's laugh). In addition to the "first laugh" being a kigo, it is beautiful imagery, reminiscent of those sweat childhood memories we all have of celebrating holidays with out families when we were little kids.

I really enjoyed senpai's haiku too because it is a beautiful message, one that reminds me of what you'd find in a greeting card! And a message I would've loved to receive in a New Year's greeting card :)

It's been really difficult to motivate myself to do anything during the break. Hopefully I'll kick myself back into things next week.

You're always so complimentary about my haiku, I look forward to composing even more this year!

I'm also looking forward to reading everyone else's. Keep up the good work みんなさん!

Hope you're all having a good 2015 so far!

It's January
I'm showing signs of a cold
Bitterly freezing

I found some phrases I really like! 風邪の気 and 底寒い, being "signs of a cold" and "bitterly cold" respectively. At least I can turn the onset of illness into poetry!

In January
The wonderful, marvelous
Delicious ice-cream!

Reminded me of the first line of Debu Note, a Death Note parody. That one's been saved in my phone for a while.
As has this last (depressing) one:

誕生日 もう年過ぎた おめでとう

たんじょうび
もうとしすぎた
おめでとう

The day of your birth
Yet another year has passed
Congratulations

Second line, I borrowed a phrase from the song
Can you feel the sarcasm oozing out of that final line?

And the winner is...... Cloud-san!

Of course it's Cloud-san because he was the only one who entered haiku this week Anyway, I'm sorry for the delay in choosing a haiku. I really had difficulty choosing one of the three haikus you submitted, Cloud-san because they were all so great!

For example, I liked the first poem you write about having a cold in the winter time because you turned an ordinary/mundane event (catching a cold) into something poetic! I also liked your second haiku because of its irony (Who eats ice cream in January? Besides me, when I was recovering from wisdom teeth removal!) Also, I never knew there was a parody on Death Note! I absolutely love Death Note! I own all 12 volumes of the Japanese manga!

Anyway the winning haiku for this week is....

The day of your birth
Yet another year has passed
Congratulations

This one really stood out to me because at first glance, it seems like it has a congratulatory tone, but I love it how the final like "おめでとう" was used sarcastically! I also love how this poem reflects the dreadful emotions some people feel with getting older with each passing year!

I couldn't make it for the last contest but here you go:

ごう
え が しらん
すみ も へん だが
ぜん の かち

絵 が 知らん
墨 も 変 だが
禅 の 勝ち

Karma
Don't know 'bout paintings
Ink seems weird as well but still
It's Zen's victory

It's most probably confusing, so let me clear things up for you (and brag) a little bit. This haiku is my way of celebrating my passing of the Japanese Culture exam I had this morning It had caused me a great deal of stress and the amount of information I had to pack inside my skull was... pretty damn big, too. Luckily, for all my fears, the teacher didn't prove to be very strict about our marks. Anyway, I was asked to describe two different painting styles (ink-wash painting and Kano school of painting) and I did so-so on this one. But then he asked me about Zen and some of it's principles and after I answered his questions he offered me a '5' (which is the highest possible grade on the university, probably like an 'A'). Truth be told, I didn't quite expect that - I thought I was going to get away with a '4+' at most. Anyway, I'm incredibly happy that it's over and now I have an entire week to revise stuff for another exam (British Culture this time).

Talk to you later, everyone!

Thanks for your haiku senpai! Wow that sounds like a difficult test! But I'm glad senpai did well on it:) was it an oral or written test? I'm way better at expressing myself in writing, I'm no great orator good luck on your upcoming tests senpai~ (I'm curious to know what questions your teacher asked about zen since I like zen and bushido and all that samurai stuff! Also I'm interested in sumi style since I've tried to make some pictures in that style! The pride I felt when I stamped my pictures with my hanko! I gave one picture to my dad as a gift and he hung it up in the living room!)

Wow a test on British culture! My best friend is British, so I wonder if he had to take that test if he would pass! The one thing I absolutely love about British culture was the Romantic Era, you know that literary genre from the late 1800s. Since you're studying English maybe you're familiar with it senpai? My favorite English poem is "I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud" by Wordsworth! Maybe you know it? Anyway good luck with your British culture test, tell us how it goes once you finish it! I just realized it next week my classes start (Japanese 2 and Mandarin 1) which I'm excited about!

Talk to you soon~
