Yay thank you for your haiku Ditto-san! I hope your poor computer gets fixed soon!

I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just I'm wondering about Japanese syllable count. Like for instance:
コンピュータ
ko n pyu - ta
1 2 3 4 5

My question is: Everyone knows that ピ+ユ (pi +yu) = ピュ (pyu), so for haiku syllabaries, are combined syllables like "pyu" counted as one syllable or as two? I hope my question make sense!

Technically speaking, we're dealing with moras in Japanese rather than just syllables. Anyway, I've done some research prior to my posting of haiku and combinations such as 'pyu' count as only one mora, so I don't think there's anything wrong with Dittoさん's haiku.

Yeah that's what I meant "moras" I just didn't know the term for it, that's why I said syllables. Anyway thanks for the answer senpai! Right now your and Ditto-san's haiku are tied! I don't know which one I will chose on Friday yet since I like them both!

Like I said, I'm bad at poetry. ;)

Anyway, I'm still a little confused about moras. I counted コンピュータ this way コ(1) ン(2) ピュ(3) ー(4) タ(5). In other words, ピュ is 1 but ピューis 2. Is that wrong?

@イチ先生 - That's perfectly understandable, don't worry about it I grabbed the concept of moras not so long ago, too And oh yeah, the contest's on! It's okay if I submit more entries, isn't it?

@ヂットさん - ピュ― makes two moras as it's essentially 'pyu' + 'u'. Chōonpu (the lengthening of a vowel represented as あ, い, う, え or お in hiragana and ー in katakana) and sokuon (a doubled consonant marked by either っ or ッ) both count as one mora, so it seems. Anyway, ヂットさん's haiku has the right form, there's nothing wrong with it

I'm still confused about moras senpai Say if I were writing 喫茶店 "kissaten" in a haiku. How many syllables would the word have because of the double "s" ?

Ki-s-sa-te-n
1 2 3 4 5

Would it have 5 syllables?

Anyway yes you can submit as many haiku as you want~

Let me say, this week's haiku winner was such a tough choice for me...both Ditto san's and senpai's poems were tied until nearly the very last second! I assure you guys that I thought about your poems very hardly and I've come to the decision that this week's winner is..... Ditto-san!!!

At first, I didn't know what his poem was about, like the deep meaning to his poem. It sounded like something someone would've said when computers were first invented--so I loved that aspect to it. When he told us on the comments that it was about his broken laptop i was like "oh, that's what he wrote about!" The reason why I chose his poem as the winner because I loved how he described a horrible event (his laptop dying) in a straight forward way, and how he was able to turn that unfortunate event into a poem!

Senpai: I also loved your poem as well, the last line of your haiku: 禅の勝ち was the most beautiful line. I don't have the right to call myself an "artist," but as someone who loves to create things like paintings or what not, i can attest to the fact that an artist puts his all into his work, and that the end of an artistic endeavor does feel like a "zen victory". So I really liked that line of your poem!

おめでとうございます〜

Assuming that 日本 read as にっぽん has 4 moras (Ni-p-po-n), きっさてん would apparently have 5 of them. It could be said that each symbol in kana stands for 1 mora (with the exception of yōon like きゃ, きゅ, きょ, etc., which also stand for 1 mora).

Anyway, here's this week's entry of mine:

冬眠
試験 完
暇 でも 怠惰
雪 の 白

とうみん
しけん かん
ひま でも たいだ
ゆき の しろ

Winter Sleep
End of the exams
I've time off but I'm idle
White colours of snow

I'm done with exams for now, thank God Should everything go alright, I'm going to receive my scores tomorrow. Anyway, I remember I promised I'd return to my kanji thread once the exam crapstorm is over, so I think you might expect an update once I figure out where I left off That said, I think I'll have to come up with a new template for the kanji sheets: one that look simpler, neater and is easy and fast to modify.

Simply put, I'll do my best to wake up from the winter sleep ;P

I know I'm announcing this early (since technically it's still Thursday evening here) but I'm going to announce this week's haiku winner!

Without further ado, this week's winner is...senpai!!! Even though he technically won by default, I still loved his poem! I love it because he described an simple event of a student's life (taking winter exams) through such imagery! The one that I love about it the most is how the title of winter's sleep relates to and ties into the imagery of the last line" "White colors of snow". I also love the tone of the poem, how it presents a calm and serene mood through the statement of the idleness and of the color of the fallen snow, which is probably blanketing everything!

おめでとう先輩!

勝ったのでもちろん嬉しいだけど、他の相手がいなかったのはちょっと…

I'm not complaining, though I still wish it was a victory through competition :c Anyway, my 1st victory! Not intending to stop there ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Glad you liked it! I'll make sure to come up with more~ But hey, people, it's not much of a contest without other contestants D: Let's write! Let the passion loose! Fight for eternal glory and the right to boast!
