I was tasked with doing a project on a society and I chose Japanese animation society. I need some opinions from you guys to help me. I need to know what you guys think of anime and also what people around you think of it. Do people around you think it’s stupid? Do they think it’s amazing? What do you think of it??? Please help!

I think it's intriguing for not only being different but also promoting snugly things like friendship and moe that are great in an ideal world, but makes you seem childish around these regions.

Most people in my area aren't into anime but they don't dislike it either. They're just like "okay".

Americans Hate Tingle

or

"Oh noes I don't understand WHY some trash like Sword Art Online come out on top of anime popularity rankings in Japn! Japanese people must all be crazy"

Trust me I've seen too many of those kinds of comments on the English-speaking Intarwebs

This is not to mention how phrases such as "Mary Sue" or "Gary Stu" are western concepts.

Some Western fans hate "characters that are too perfect" while some fans on the other side of the planet may find them admirable BECAUSE they're perfect.

Good ole' value dissonance for the win.

I remember reading in an issue of Animerica about 20 years ago(?) where the author was ranting on and on regarding how Ah! My Goddess was sexist. Uhhhh huh. What'evs.

Of course, this happens all over the world and can also work in reverse http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/TheVisionOfEscaflowne

One person thinks I am a pervert who primarily watches harems and hentai. FTL.

I'm not American so you can ignore my tea-drinking arse, but why not make a poll? There'd be some sense of direction in your project, plus you'd get both qualitative and quantitative data if you threw it all into a graph in the end and slapped pretty colours onto it.

Actually wait. It's a sociology project. Never mind.

I can't speak for the entirety of my nation but I know a lot of people who like anime AND manga (please don't forget manga).

I found anime when I was really young, like a toddler, so my view of anime and manga is gonna be different from someone who hasn't got a clue what it is.

I say anime in America is as popular as anything else foreign. Some people like it, some don't.

Mostly people with internet only know what anime is. .

Gamers tend to love anime, drinkers / party people that like cod and other boring stuff tend to not know what anime is lol

So unless it's popular on Nickelodean or some other main Television channel, most won't even know what anime is. .

though keep in mind - netflix advertises a decent amount of anime

My university is full of gamers and otaku so people here all know what anime is and most of them generally enjoy it. Often people here identify more with the gamer subculture than the otaku subculture though. This is a stark contrast with high school where people thought that anime meant hentai.

You know you are going to get biased answers here, but it seems like most of the people here are involved in social circles that involve anime/manga. I love anime but my social environment does not. My work, school and family thinks its childish, weird and nerdy, and i think thats what the overall opinion is-- it is still a foreign topic. Mostly because of the label that anime carries, which happens to be associated with "nerds" or socially withdrawn people.Sadly, the great majority of American society will still stigmatize anime into a negative category.

Definitely amazing. Anime gives a sense of adventure and sometimes even brings you into the world itself if you can relate to the situations at hand. Sure, it's no sitcom where you see real people, but they lay down moral lessons underneath it all under the pretense of animated characters. I like the diversity of it, action, comedy, romance, etc... It's definitely a matter love/hate for others who might not know about it. When i ask, people either share their favorites or just ask me what I am talking about. Rarely I see insults.

I love anime. It's a big part of my life. Through anime I've learned lessons I would have never thought I would learn. Anime also led me to practice my drawing skills more. Because of anime I'm interested in Japanese culture and learning Japanese. I've taken Japanese language classes and talked to Japanese exchange students only because of anime. And most of all when I'm feeling down, anime picks me back up.

I lived in Los Angeles before and it seemed like a lot of students in high school and college knew at least little about anime. I met handfuls of students from classes who knew and loved anime even as much as I do. It was not uncommon for someone to have anime merchandise on them in my previous college.

Now I live in a small town and not many students know what anime even is (its heartbreaking :c). I'm still open with my passion for anime but I get feeling people here thinks its weird or its only hentai stuff.

I personally think anime is amazing. I don't think that many of the people around real care all that much about anime.
