Sequels that Ruin the Original

Once in a while there comes a sequel or second season that is more or less an add-on to the original usually due to popular demand. Sometimes these sequels are okay, but sometimes they actually ruin the happy or decent ending of the first season / original run.

For me I have to say that would be
Eureka 7 AO :

Stand alone it has a pretty crappy and extremely convoluted story. It's romance is a complete mess, it's villain's motivation is idiotic, and it's really just headache inducing overall. However worse than that, it turns the ambiguously happy ending of Eureka 7 into a rather sad and harsh ending. Also Eureka 7 AO pretty much ends without anyone accomplishing anything because of convoluted time manipulation plot devices.

Also not an anime but
Chrono Cross :

This one is different from Eureka 7 AO, as it is actually a wonderful game stand alone. In fact you could argue that it's better than its original which was a legendary game in its own right. However, as a sequel Chrono Cross is painful, because it basically turns the happy ending of its prequel Chrono Trigger into a tragedy. I would have no problem with this game if it wasn't a sequel but its own story.

Are there any sequels which you think ruined the integrity of the original work? For me personally it's these types of sequels that make me wary about 'second seasons' for animes with conclusive stories. Because there is a good chance that something that doesn't need fixing could be broken in the process.

Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor

The less said about it the better. There were handful of cool ideas, but the bad outweighed the good by a huge margin. RIP Darker than Black :(

You and Me 2 was good in it's own way, I don't think the first season was any better but the stories were very vague.

I'm guessing they're letting us make the ending for the anime with fan-fictions, I think it was unique.. but some real action was missing.

Love, Chuunibyou, and Other Delusions comes to mind... The second season was just completely pointless and made zero progress. Actually I think it somehow managed to take steps backwards from season 1.

Also the extra half-season of Kokoro Connect nearly ruined the whole show for me. Just terrible terrible narrative and character regression.

Well if going with gaming included then I'd go with Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge. Luckily I don't think it really 'ruins' or even 'damages' the original its just a bad sequel.

Don't have any animes to put though

I don't really think any sequel can ruin the original. If I don't like a certain sequel I ignore it as part of the series like it doesn't exist; now a bad sequel would put in this category would be Dragonball GT for example. I will never let a bad franchise leach ruin the rest for me.

Inb4 Code Geass.
I don't have a problem with it, but others do.

Don't get me started on Duke Nukem Forever. Best part was throwing shit around, that's it.

Naruto Shippuden. Tried to do too much and got too convoluted. Character characterization were all dead by the time the manga ended. Horrible, just horrible.

Darker Than Black Season 2. The ultimate fail! Unless of course they make a School Days sequel.

CG:R2...But then again, I don't like any Code Geass. Season 2, like Shippuden, tried to do too much. Fail.

Does Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion count? That was painful, contradictory shit.

I guess for a non-anime sequel I'd go for the Godfather Part 3 because of Sophia Coppola...Holy shit, she ruined everything.

And Indiana Jones: Crystal Skull doesn't exist. It doesn't exist. Temple of Doom was horrible as well.

Darker than Black S2 and Chuunibyou S2 were definitely terrible, though I wouldn't say a show can ruin its original because the first seasons were still good despite the bad second season. Sequel to Last Exile wasn't particularly great either.

Some second seasons/sequels that, if they didn't ruin the original, are best forgotten.

Infinite Stratos - At the end of season 1 it was quite obvious that Ichika was about to kiss Hoki (and pretty much settled on one girl). The second season was really nothing more than a long series of OVAs that ignored this.

Love, Chuunibyou, and Other Delusions - As others have pointed out, the characters seemed to regress in their character development. Plus, certain things from the end of the first season (like the police chase) were ignored.

I can name a large number of other shows that, while the sequels didn't ruin the original, they have just gone on to long.

Someone might mention SAO ALfheim Arc (Does that count as a second season, I heard many people refer to it as s2.)

As far as the anime goes I don't think Da Capo could have had a happier ending. That is unless you don't like Nemu. If you do though she got the whole 10 yards as far as good endings go.

Not anime, but Matrix and Mass Effect.
