Target Pulls GTA V off shelves due to....
Posted 12/3/14 , edited 12/3/14
The games depiction of violence against women.

Target Australia will no longer be selling Grand Theft Auto V due to what many see as violence against women, including sexual violence, like rape.

In a statement they said,

"We've been speaking to many customers over recent days about the game, and there is a significant level of concern about the game's content,"

"We've also had customer feedback in support of us selling the game, and we respect their perspective on the issue.

"However, we feel the decision to stop selling GTA5 is in line with the majority view of our customers."

This decision goes against a recent legislation in Australia that allowed video games to be rated 18 + to be released in Australia, which before was not allowed.

What are your thoughts on this? I've never played GTA V but I've played the other ones, and yes, there is violence, rape, drugs, murder. But to me, it's only a video game.

Anime is cast under the same umbrella. Sexual images are pretty normal to see, and a lot of people don't agree with them. I know a few examples of sexual violence towards women in anime, but again, as it's only entertainment, it really doesn't bother me all that much.

I should add this isn't the first time this happened for Rockstar and Australia. GTA III was withdrawn for the same reasons, San Andreas was withdrawn, and GTA IV was heavily edited so it could even be released.

Lots of censorship..

Edit:

Comment pulled upon introspection. This may actually prove to be a good thing after all, but I'm concerned it may have a negative impact on feminism's image. I could be (and in fact probably am) worrying over nothing at all, but the worry remains regardless that people will start screaming about how "social justice warriors" are out to ruin things for everyone in the name of "imaginary" causes.

As it is, from my perspective this is nothing more than Target responding effectively to consumer complaints. Nothing wrong with that, and maybe this will prompt a change in game publishers.

It's a shame, really. The game, from what I've played over a duration of over 150 hours, doesn't have any direct violence against women throughout the entire story mode. Either that or I just somehow missed a gigantic portion of the game that contains this violence against women.

Hopefully this only ends up spreading to Target and only Target.

I don't recall it either. I'm pretty sure this is one of those cases akin to the example of 'You can kill prostitutes and get your money back'. Key word there being 'can' not 'have to'. Given how the cast is outweighed by males, I recall far more violence against them than women. Even when Trevor does kill a woman, not only do we not see it happen, he kills her husband alongside her. Men are battered and beaten way worse than any of the females are, and to anyone who disagrees I point you to the torture scene. I feel bad the Aussies on this one, since I know there are plenty who are completely sick and tired of things not being sold to them because of specific content. Like you say, hopefully this one spreads no further than Target.

There isn't any rape in GTA, this seems to be an overreaction

the new age feminists definition of violence against women is anything that doesn't treat women as gods among mere plebeian males.

Now that they've pulled GTA off the shelves, women can safely shop without getting raped and killed.

If I remember correctly, Left 4 Dead 2 was also censored or something in Australia. Don't they have more strict policies there?

I'm not Australian, but their policies are a lot stricter than most countries. Not totalitarian like, but still strict enough they can do this sort of thing 4 times to the same franchise.

I wonder why, it's not like they have a really strict government or anything compared to heavy communist countries.

well, on the thoughts of rape in entertainment....
if its critial part of the story (btoom comees to mind) thin im okay with it. same if its in a game, as long as its in a cut scene.
if its something the player can or must do, then no im not okay with it.

just my .02
