Just to figure out advertising....

Currently reading about social proof and herd mentality and how to use it to your advantage in creating astronger marketing campaign....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_proof

Just for fun some other random stuff

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirroring_(psychology)

and because, quite frankly, I tend to not beat around the bush,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda_techniques

(mind you, I do not use forms of propaganda. It's just that advertising and propaganda overlap often times)

Well, I should probably ask a question here, so it's a proper forum topic, so

What do you think about marketing and its use of psychology/sociology to sell you things?

In what ways might you fall for buying things due to advertising, or in what ways might you have fallen for advertising methods?

Don't worry. This isn't research gathering. Just an informal discussion.

I was doing google adwords. It's laughable, but no matter what you search, walmart, target, best buy.. all the big box stores come up SOMEWHERE, if no where else than just the side column. Need a plumber? here's an ad for home depot! looking for the address of your local representative? Try walmart!

I mean I was looking for pet related services, and I'm getting my ass handed to me by kohls.. KOHLS. which has next to nothing to do with pets, and even less with pet related services...

SMH....

And the circularness of if all is frightening. What google and search engines basically do is they say, "ok, this site gets the most hits, so it should rank higher", well, that in turn keeps them top ranked, and prevents someone else from breaking through the top ten results (unless they have some serious SEO mojo working), which maintains that you WILL visits only the biggest sites. SEO applies to ads too, so you pay an arm and a leg for ads unless your site ranks high on relevancy, which is based on your content, which, paradoxically, is why you are asking for ads because you can't break into the top ten, because you don't get enough hits to begin with.

Granted, this is a super simplified example, because there's about 200 things that google considers, and our ads rank decent in relevancy, but it still pisses e off when you pay something like $3 a click, and you still can't hit top of the page with your regular ads.

Hence, the other end of advertising using cheap and effective methods, and testing out different venues and seeing what sticks. >.<

O.o
How so?

I don't really trust anything unless there is solid science behind it or it has a good reputation. Reputation is hard to judge now that there are "reputation management" companies out there that legally bully people who post bad reviews and they plant positive reviews for themselves as well as buying out top sites.

Also you have to beware of the bait and switch where there is a good but high priced product that they drop the price on because they made changes and didn't reflect them in the model number... that's a popular thing to do today as well.

I feel unaffected by ads most of the time. They never really influence me to buy a product. Maybe if they have a little humor or a short storyline I might laugh or smile, but other than that I never get an urge to buy whatever's being advertised.

But that's just me.
