I was just wondering if i was the only one who finds SAO among the most overrated anime around, because all i see is constant praise for this show, yet i find it painfully average.

I have to admit i loved the first season (even if the pacing was horrible) for what it was but as the seasons continue this series just bores me more and more. I don't see the obsession with Kirito either, he is such a weak protagonist who has an incredibly bare bones personality and gets very little development throughout the seasons (which is pretty much par for the course with the other characters too). He is also too powerful, there is never any real concern that he is going to lose at anything, which is just boring. The harem also annoys me to no end in this show since Kirito and Asuna are supposed to be 'married', yet they barely interact with one another after the first season. All the cast of the show do now is fanny about doing random stuff inside AOL with no real purpose, at it's core it's like watching someone play a video game (and since they can't die there is no real risk anymore). I can't see past that so most of the tension during fights is killed for me. I appreciate in the newest episodes they have developed on Asuna's character quite a bit which is very refreshing.

I'm not here to hate on the show, if you like it then fair play, i just don't get the hype that surrounds it and wanted to know if anyone felt the same way or if not what you like about the show so i can get a better idea of why it's so popular.

Did you know?

The only way for OP characters to die is when they kill themselves?

That is a good point, i never really thought of it as a starter anime.

My starter, like a lot of others, was Naruto.

I can see this is just flame, go to another thread to complain. I've posted a thread from a neutral position about SAO plot holes before. Guess what? One slight thing that wasn't added from the LN. Kirito is obviously OP, but the latest arc seems to fix that a lot. You haven't been on the forums long if you see only praise about SAO, because it's often the opposite.

I take pride in knowing my favorite shows are never considered "overrated". Just deviants.

Depends on the viewer. As a gamer and someone who loved the .hack/ series, SAO was an instant hit for me and still is. Along with Log Horizon, Accel World, and even Btooom (depending on how you look at it) I simply think they're all awesome concepts to work off of. May peak many peoples interest or tickle that longing and want for a similar immersive gaming experience to exist (occulus rift?).

This is one of the things i can definitely understand, being a game developer i find the settings for these kinds of anime very interesting! It's mainly the characters i am not a huge fan of.

SAO has two major problems. One is that it is wildly inconsistent. When it's good, it's amazing, when it's bad I just want to turn it off. The other is that most of the time, given the choice between action and character development, the answer is action.

Actually, there is a third problem. $90 for season 1.

I had more to say, but it was coming off all fanboy, so yeah... I love this show to a mildly unhealthy degree, but it's got some issues.
