the show is lovable at some points and at others it is ruined by the horrifying pacing

i honestly prefer Log Horizon (another MMORPG anime) because it dosen't rush the archs or character development at all and the issues faced just seem more accurate---

Must not be your sort of thing then, since the first episode is a pretty good indicator of the first arc. Then it got worse. Then it got better. Then it got awful. Then it got really good again. Then I cried.

If people aren't looking for a well developed story then it is probably the fix they need. It has everything. I wouldn't say it is a work of art or anything, but if I met someone that just started getting into anime then I wouldn't feel bad easing them in by directing them to the show even with its plot holes, bad logic, ect ect - that can signal it is overrated given how it seems very few people rate it down (relative to the size of its fans).

I mean, I don't believe anyone thinks Kirito saving the day in Episode 20 of SAO II was "good writing" or anything. It felt so out of place that I'd give it a -1 just for pushing "Kirito is this bad ass" down the audience's throat in an otherwise charming episode (coming from an early MMORPG player). I can't imagine anyone really being super excited and thought it only made the show better.

That's all I have to say. tldr - people overlook flaws and hence, rate it higher than it probably should be.

I agree with the criticisms in OP, but I still haven't given up on SAO. There were times during this season (GGO mostly) where it had just about no qualities at all, but the animation and action sequences since then have been great fun. And now this latest arc is getting nicely feelsy.

I understand people who think it's overrated. Personally, i absolutely love the show myself (something about the whole lore and everything just settles with me) but even as someone who's a huge fan, I can know the problems with pacing, character development, etc... would put people off.

Oy vey...

If your definition of 'overrated' is 'not deserving of the praise it gets' as opposed to 'absolutely worthless', then I'll say it might be, but I'll also say that it's not bad. I see a problem here, and it isn't the OP protagonist. The main problem here is that there are just so many people who place this anime on such a high pedestal, whatever their reasons may be (from what I've heard, anyway. I've yet to see more than the occasional fan give incredibly high praise for it); consequently, of course there are going to be people to counter all that, tear it down, and point out the many flaws of it. It's not a perfect anime. It's not the best anime ever. It's not disgustingly terrible, either. To put it incredibly simply, it's just good.

Then again, it's all about perspective. For some people this may be the best anime they've seen, so why not give it a ten? They might not see they flaws in it, like a poorly developed story at times, a protagonist that has been OP since episode one, with a pretty generic personality, pointless harems, and whatnot. So why not give it a ten out of ten, if they don't register most of that?

From my experience of what I've seen, I'll say that of course there's hype for it. But I have yet to see anything that would prompt me to say that it's terribly overrated. I see far more hate for the series than praise, so really, I don't understand how you came to this conclusion.

Wh-what?

Well, if you're saying this is the best anime for gamers, I'd say Log Horizon is far more game-centric, instead of focusing more on the characters' mentality. After the ALO arc, reality and the virtual world still played played a role, but much less so. Log Horizon has been consistent in trying to understand the virtual world, and it consistently caters to the MMO community in its explanations, and the subject matters. Take the episode ten, for example, with the guild leader's monologue and speech about his experience with being in the playing the game, making friends, joining a guild and making bonds. People could even relate to his view on raids. Because MMORPGs actually exist, as opposed to VRMMOs more people are going to relate to Log Horizon, so I would say it's a much better anime for gamers.

I play a lot of MMOs, and it pisses me off how Kirito uses a sword in Gun Gale Online. Reminds me of those melee wielding speedsters you'd see in any fps right now.

The show is known to be extremely polarizing. There is a reason that show is the 2nd most popular series on MAL and yet out of 10 reviews you can easily see at least 4-5 reviews that give the show a score lower than 5.

The show is decent but i wished they would've gotten to the castle at level 100. So the show dissapointed me when the first season ended there. Then there's the fan service in SAO II and too much of it, it was hgard to watch it because the was so much, and then when Kirito pulled Sinon's tail I said " I'm done". Speaking of which the second par SAO II seemed unnecessary with everything done it felt like a filler arc.
