Any show that generates a fandom is going to look overrated to those outside of it. SAO just happens to be larger than most and also fairly susceptible to criticism, which simultaneously makes it both conspicuous and easy to hit.

You can still like or dislike it for good reason, it just comes down to what you see in it and how entrenched you get.

As how I see it (and at first I took time to understand it and accept it) is that SAO began as a series of action in extreme, danger (for the deaths in real life) and the dream of every gamer entering in a virtual world, all that gave a good first impression and that is why the first season was the best.
What happened next was precisely the loss of several of these factors. Less action, there was no danger of dying in reality ... that's why the 2nd season fell down. With the third was the same and the fourth is no different.
What took me time to understand was that SAO is also gender DRAMA. Yes, that's right . Perhaps the action is reduced from the first season but the drama was always in force in all seasons. What to do to enjoy SAO the most now is to see it in that way.

The fact that the protagonist is an OP has nothing wrong, while it's not invincible. There are hundreds of animes with OP characters (Berserk, Afro Samurai, etc)
On the other hand, one thing I have not liked a lot was the inclusion of Fan service, especially since the second season (the first had but not too much )

The theme of "overrating" is subjective. In my opinion, SAO is very good, not the best, but very good.

Welp, here is my opinion on the matter. I hadn't watched anime for a couple of years and I had just got back into it when I watched SAO. The first time I saw it I absolutely loved it, sure, there were flaws, but it was still really enjoyable. After I finished it I got into watching a lot of other stuff. Better stuff. Stuff that makes it so when you watch it a second time you realize it wasn't all you cracked it up to be. It really is a gateway anime. Once you've watched your fair share of anime, it doesn't really feel too special, but for someone wanting to get into anime, it was pretty damn great at the time. And I think that is where it lies. There are some people who got into anime thanks to it and some keep looking back at it with nostalgia, thinking it to be great or a masterpiece, when it was really only good at best. Just my thoughts on it.

People think SAO sucks, but I love it.
People love crap like Fairy tail or Hunter x Hunter, and I think it sucks.

It's just how the world works, don't bother trying to understand.

There are about one million threads just like this one... You know, for a series that really is not that bad, it sure does get a disproportionate amount of hate directed at it for some reason. This isn't the worst anime out there. For the most part it is competently done. No, it isn't the best thing ever, either. There are a lot of issues in both story and character development that are hard to ignore some times. Especially in the first series where it was wildly inconsistent, especially compared to the Light Novels. However, Series 2 has been a lot better in both those departments (though the added unneeded fanservice does take away from it a bit.)

Also, for everyone going on and on about Kirito being OP... he has been more lucky than OP lately. Time to get over that now. :/

Agree completely.

You see much the same thing with Attack on Titan; a few years ago, you found it with Love Hina. And I'm sure that there are others. Whenever you have a very popular show that also has some obvious flaws, you're going to get a lot of haters crop up, and that in turn causes people who do like the show to become entrenched in their positions--and makes them not want to acknowledge the faults that actually do exist. It's debate polarization, pure and simple.

Personally, I have no problem with hating popular shows. But I do have a problem with hating a show BECAUSE it's popular--just like I have a problem with people liking a show because it's popular. Both groups are letting others form their own opinions for them, and that's just dumb.

As to the OP, I can tell you what I personally like about the show: I enjoy the Asuna-Kirito romance--particularly that Asuna is neither a Tsundere, nor a wilting wall-flower; I find the universe interesting--both Aincrad, and the "real world" in which VR is playing an increasingly important role; I enjoy many of the side-chars (Yui, Liz, Sinon, etc.); and I like the fact that gamers are shown as real people (all too often, especially in Western fiction, gamers are shown only as social deviants).

That being said, I really dislike the incest, sexual assault, and tentacle parts of Fairy Dance, I can see the liberties taken with MMOs and game (even though they don't bother me); and I think that it lays on the emotional drama a bit thick at times. But for me, the positives outweigh the negatives, so I watch it---though I'd never look down on someone for feeling the other way, as long as they are giving their own real opinion and not simply parroting or attacking whatever the fad of the moment happens to be.

Also, as for Kirito being OP: Isn't that just the genre? It's a Shonen action series, after all.

Shonen leads are almost always OP, whether its Strike the Blood, or A Certain Magical Index, or Dragonball, or Yu Gi Oh, or Date A Live or Aria the Scarlet Ammo or Familiar of Zero... do I really need to go on?

All of those shows have OP heroes who either a) have certain conditions that must be met in order to be OP, b) are still learning how to fully utilize their OP-ness, or c) periodically run into villians just as OP as they are. Kirito is no different.

He seems to start out OP than have to go through immense training to be OP.

Don't get me wrong. The first season was Great for the first half. But this third season I can't stand to watch, it has almost completely lost my interest. Very overrated now

I also agree that it is overrate...along with Attack on Titan as time has gone on (I could rant about AoT's flaws too, but I'll save that for another forum).

I intially really like SAO, but I don't know if the show as only signed for 11-13 episodes and then was given more due to popularity or what, but I really enjoyed the initial premise of it. up until the ending of the first game.

The second game, elf/fairy theme, never held my interest....so I haven't really picked it up again. When I heard the premise of SOA 2, I was like so this game is exactly like SOA but with guns and some new characters...? Sorry not interested

I feel like SOA can go on forever constantly "game hopping" which many people may like, but I am not a fan to watch an anime over a season long unless it holds my interest.

My first anime was Naruto with my anime club, once we caught up to the weekly Japanese release, we moved on to watching something else while we waited for the next week's episode. I actually haven't picked it up since high school. FMA Is probably the first anime that I picked up and finished.

You're not alone, buddy. So much of it is bad, the good doesn't weight it off.
