It's just carefully formulated to appeal to the brains of 12-24 year old males. If you look at it that way, it's a damn brilliant work of science :D

Yeah. I hate those crutches in writing. While I love a few things about Type-Moon works, even they fall into the trap of using that trick to easier allow audiences to feel for some of their female characters.

Not that I read the LNs for SAO, but I shouted something like that during forced moments of the anime.

dang, I'd never noticed that connection before. Is there a 'hack otaku writer' seminar that you can go to to learn these awesome writing tricks?

Love the comment by the way. Thanks for that.

I'm a 32 year old woman. I watch SAO with my 31 year old husband. We both love it. Perhaps it helps that we've been playing MMOs together for the last 8 years.

But, as my daughter has been wont to tell us when she doesn't want to try a particular food at the dinner table, everyone has different tastes and that's ok.

SAO is incredibly popular, but you must understand that there's a difference between "popular" and "overrated".

I see waaaay more people hating on SAO than those who love it, but even more people just watch the show and think "this is decent, but nothing to write home about".

To understand why, I'd compare it to The Hunger Games, as in both have a really cool premise that interests a MASSIVE potential audience, ranging from boys to girls, teenagers to adults (and SAO attracts a lot of people that don't generally watch anime with its premise). However, also like The Hunger Games, SAO isn't particularly great.

Just yesterday I saw the latest Hunger Games movie with my friends; nobody thought it was that great, but neither did we complain. It is incredibly mainstream, and in appealing to so many different people it loses some of its spark.

Same with SAO; the show isn't great, but it's not bad either, and it has enough appeal to attract a massive audience. It's popular, but by no means overrated.

I have seen worse, 'tis true, but here's what I'll add to the discussion: I don't much care for the anime (because of its Mary Sue protag-kun and all the convenient plot holes that let him do whatever he damn well pleases), but the game (Hollow Fragment) is a surprising amount of fun, especially because it lets the player screw around with what they don't like about the show (e.g. you can completely ignore Asuna and canoodle with ... pretty much anybody else, possibly including Klein, IIRC). Hell, I even renamed Kirito to "Not Kirito".

Now I really want Hollow Fragment just to mess with the anime, but I already got Tales of Hearts R :O

You should have stopped me from getting the game before I got thrown into its 40+ hour plot!

Had to be done, man, had to be done. I was right in there with you, pre-ordering Hearts R on Day One to please Bamco and keep them from withholding Zestiria from us. No shame in this. But do play Hollow Fragment at some point if what I said sounds interesting. (And ... don't go into the Hollow Area itself until you've leveled up a bit in the main areas. It seems like Level 125 Giant Eyeball Monster wants Kirito's ass so bad that it's willing to chase him like a coked-up Benny Hill.)

I found another similarity between the two as well: Book V. Anime/movie
You gain more if you watch/read both, and both stay fairly well to the source.

its pretty overrated lol. Almost every popular show is overrated (that doesn't mean its not good what so ever. It simply means its more hyped up that it should be)

I personally fucking love alot of super popular shounens (bleach, HXH, Reborn) and I think they are overrated just like i think SAO is overrated.

According to myanimelist.com SAO is ranked at #333.
That's not very overrated at all in my opinion.

Here is the recipe for SAO :

Start with your .hack//G.U. kit.

Take out your Haseo and be sure to remove any extra personality flaws and character development when preparing him for consumption by an Otaku audience. After about an hour of baking in a deus ex machina glaze your Haseo should now be a nice and crispy Kirito.

Once your Haseo has been Kirito-ized it's time to work on the harem. The harem is very simple, just remove excess self confidence, independent spirit, and individual usefulness from each member and they are ready to serve.

Finally we prepare the villain. Now at first it may be difficult to discern the villain in your .hack//G.U. but there is a simple trick. Just take male character with the most character development and deepest backstory outside of the main character, and you have got your villain. Now to prepare him for use in the SAO stew you will need to remove all that nasty luggage he is carrying, once you have finished with that it's time for the final garnishes. You will want to make him blatantly evil, make sure you don't miss any grey areas when painting him black, and finally add some cheats in for him to replace all that actual skill you removed during the initial preparations.

Now just top with your desired level of sexual assault subplot and bon appétit.

Depends on the viewer. As a gamer and someone who loved the .hack/ series, SAO was an instant hit for me and still is. Along with Log Horizon, Accel World, and even Btooom (depending on how you look at it) I simply think they're all awesome concepts to work off of. May peak many peoples interest or tickle that longing and want for a similar immersive gaming experience to exist (occulus rift?).

As an avid Fan of .Hack/Sign, I find your lack of faith insulting!

Not even other .Hack's can compete with the shear quality of .Hack/Sign's character building and development!

And, while the animation was pretty, I was distraught at the use of Real Life in Quantum. That's....that's now how you do it. YOU'VE RUINED PART OF THE ATMOSPHERE!

I have more thoughts, but I'm not going to share them for the moment.
