Can you name me one childhood friend in anime that gets the guy/girl at the end?! Maybe because I only started watching anime seriously a few months ago but I have not seen such thing.

Here are MANY examples of those who end up by themselves because the character on the cover/ the mysterious student shows up:

of course there are a few cases when romance does happen..but

And finally, this season, soon to be the victim of the "childhood friend" curse:

SOOOO, question: do you know any anime couple that starts from childhood friends and even though some mysterious transfer student shows up they still end up dating?

Man childhood friends are almost always my favorite and poor Hatoko being affected by the curse. As to an anime where the childhood friend is the main love interest it would be Tokyo Raven

Lets see

Miuna -> Hikari (1)

Chisaki -> Hikari (2)

Manaka <-> Hikari (3)

Kaname -> Chisaki (4)

Miuna's friend -> Kaname (5)

Tsumugu -> Chisaki (6)

hexagon I guess.

Whichever path you take, it always leads toward the light (Hikari - Japanese for light).

It has often bothered me why someone would go through the trouble to developed a character with a long history with the protagonist, to the point where she (or he) is called a "childhood friend", only to be thrown aside. Does anyone have or know of a real life experience where a childhood friend actually did end up together with their sweetheart?

I know one person who is dating his childhood friend right now though they have been doing pretty much everything together from attending the same high school to the same college. He does not watch a lot of anime but when I brought up the question he said that he would be more likely to stick with his childhood friend than someone who just randomly shows up regardless of how mysterious/ interesting that person is. Guess that's the difference between real life and anime.

Not real life. But the old sitcom Boy Meets World did the whole childhood friend thing. Actually as far as I remember once they started on the childhood friend route they never deviated from it again.

I think one of the stupidest but perhaps truest explanations of why a childhood friend didn't win in Anime would have to be in Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai. The childhood friend really tried in this one, and at the end the main character told her "You are totally my type. I like everything about you. But you are my childhood friend so I can't go out with you." I think that there are a lot of people who desire mystery as opposed to familiarity in a romantic relationship. I think that pretty much is at the core of why the childhood friend rarely wins. I think it's also the primary cause of divorce.

It's a bit of a challenge but:

I began this post thinking I had a lot more to contribute but it turns out this was a lot harder than expected.

I don't think Kanon is all of them. Just Makoto, Nayuki, and Ayu.

As far as Angelic Layer goes, I haven't read the manga but I remember reading a summary of it and while in the anime that guy ends up with his childhood friend I think in the manga he ends up with the main girl. I just checked up on it. The manga and anime pairings are switched around. Basically it's like, [Girl A x Boy A] [Girl B x Boy B] in the anime, [Girl A x Boy B] [Girl B x Boy A] in the manga.

I'm actually surprised you were able to find some of the rare anime where the childhood friend doesn't win. It took me forever to find those. So here are just a couple off the top of my head that I think are good and worth watching:

Little Busters!-More focused on friendship than romance but the one girl in the group of childhood freinds eventually gets with the MC.
Kanon-Everyone is a childhood friend in this one (with the exception of Shiori.)
Shuffle!-In this one there's two childhood friends, Kaede and Asa. Although the former is more of one than the latter but honestly you wouldn't want her with him by the end of this anyway.

I really hope Yozora Mikazuki wins in Haganai. She's not a child molester like Sena.
