I already posted in the reindeer thread, but man, you guessed it!

If it looks like an anime, it HAS to be one.

Terran logic.

Oh course. Being a Terran must be the "in" thing lately. Either that or i haven't paid attention to it much.

You know.

If competition is about fun and sportsmanship. Why do we keep score?

Great question! If competition was solely about fun and sportsmanship, we would all be happy winners. But the harsh truth is that competition provides competitiveness and upsets to go with its fun and happy side.

I don't think you can really compare Anime and Cartoons. Cartoons are most often designed for kids and fairly young audiences, whereas with Anime and the entire Manga culture you have specifically different age groups the productions are geared towards.

But because some genres have broad age groups they aim towards, like Shonen for 15 - 25(~30 maybe), they have various elements merged within their shows, stuff that tries to appeal to all of the ages. I guess that's what makes it so hard to grasp Anime as something apart of cartoons.

Three to four years ago I had this crystalizing moment about Anime. I was around 20 and I was talking to a youngster at the age of 15 or younger about Naruto Shippuuden. It was interesting to getting to know what appelead him on the show, and he was mostly like "Oh Rasengang and the Ninja hand-signs..." etc. and what not and he would actually perform some signs in front of me, too.

I found that actually pretty funny, because stuff like that appealed the least to me in that show, I was more interested in the plot, the exploring of the philosophy of the hate circle and the struggles to break out of it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the action as well and they too have a certain story telling functions that at to the aforementioned philosophy, but they are of minor importance in comparison, or at least they were for me.

Frankly, even today I could live without the unnecessary booby shots or patny shots, or you know all the unnecessary childish stuff, but being a long time watcher, you eventually start ignoring those aspects and enjoy the story with or without them.

Seriously, plot-wise, Anime top a lot of Hollywood level productions.

So in conclusion, Anime, I think you could say, is eveything that is 2D Animation with the japanese spirit. That's my opinion of it. I wouldn't classify all 2D animation as Anime, neither 2D Animation that is produced in Japan. But Anime do have certain properties you won't find as exentuated in other cartoons and additionally Anime tend to have more complex and indepth stories.

I might have just posted total bullshit, of course. That is always a possibility.

So... If I read that right. If we suddenly lump cartoon and anime together, a layer of competitiveness between cartoon and anime is lost. We lose a part of evolution in both mediums.

By disregarding segregation we devalue both anime and cartoons...

Well more like suddenly lumping cartoons and anime together will bring competitiveness between those who agree and those who disagree. But it certainly does lose evolution and distinction between the two mediums.

There are good anime and there are good cartoons. What's so hard about saying that for people?
