I play tons of pathfinder (a different version of dungeons and dragons) and a while back I've obtained the gamemaster guide. It stated that there are several ways to come up with something new but the one that caught my eye was to steal without shame but modify it so much that it hardly ever looks like the original. oddly because of that (and I'm a little embarrassed about it) I took to-love-ru and turned it into a very dark novel(it's a work in progress still). Have you ever taken an idea and morphed it into something completely different from the original?

Well China does it all the time with products designed in other countries. It's a lot how business works. If you can get your hands on a new innovation before it goes viral and make it your own then you're going to make easy bank. I personally don't like it because I'm a big fan of creativity and giving credit for that creativity, but say I need to write a science essay or something then I'm stealing someones shit because school sucks and I don't like learning things that I'll never need in the future. Also its a lot of the same things with anime, for example, SAO comes out and Log Horizon thinks they can do a better job of the whole game world concept, and to that I personally think SAO left that shit in the dust because its no where near as entertaining as SAO.

Tried. It seems like everything has already been thought of.

Happens in the world of art.
All I hear my instructors talk about are all these people that had made pieces and influenced others while I'm clueless about what they do besides mine just come from my thoughts.
I'm just not a good person who pays attention probably.
I think it's original for my pieces.

...Might as well rename this thread 'plagiarism'.

Jokes aside, I'm a music student, and we do this all the time with compositions. Seriously, composers steal ideas all the time from each other. For our final composition project, some classmates of mine took inspiration from tunes they'd heard.

I imagine it's not all that uncommon. There's inspiration, then there's straight-up plagiarism. There's nothing wrong with getting inspiration from something.

This douchebag got away with doing it more than a few times...

Here's the most famous case of totally stealing someone else's work...

i do it all the time. its called 'standing on the shoulders of others'.

serisouly, tho, if tis storys, then there is very little that is new. john williams stole gustav holst ending for star wars. tho i think its more of a shout out than stealing at this point.

don't limit you inspiration, tho its nice if you say what its based on, out of respect for the origonal work.

I think it's fine, I think it's also a part of creativity.

I love creativity, it's like there's a blank space or page with no rules, no bounds, truly free to do whatever you please. It's like let's have some fun and play.

And because of it being so free there isn't a restriction such as you can't copy. Rather we can make it how we want now, the ending can change, the characters can evolve or weaken, or die or live, get married, become immortal, become invincible or vulnerable.

Believe it or not, this concept is actually taught in my video game design classes
