I recently had a conversation with my partner about anime now and anime back in the day...

The conversation went a little something like this.

I am really getting sick and tired of animes where the protagonist is whiny and completely un accepting of their situation.

A perfect example of this is shows like Evangelion and Eureka 7. Where both Shinji and Renton are thrown into their world saving destinies due to family blood lines or because there father just so happens to be some famous dude.... BAD PARENTING at its finest!!!

While I know and agree that Evangelion has its merits ;I was waiting for something to happen with Eureka 7 and simply put... nothing did .

**SPOILERS***

Right, because the protagonist is the catalyst for everyone's actions, but he's a spineless worm child. That's the problem with having a character rather than an object be the macguffin. If the character has no will of their own, they may as well have been an object so that the audience's time isn't wasted on the tedious task of twisting the macguffin's arm every time they have to do their macguffin thing.

But this has been the problem for a long time with anime, both new and classic. A tendency to have a character that's either a limp noodle or, typical of shounen adventure titles, a massive tryhard that never runs out of energy. It's rare to get one with some real depth, instead of being heavily polarized.
