I usually ask them what shows/genres they prefer and I'll usually start from there. I typically recommend Death Note or AoT.

To get someone in to anime, you would have to start with probably, a genre they like or if they are like my older sister, just something funny and cute that is easy to understand.

Everyone I know unaffiliated with anime won't even give it a chance.

But I did take a friend, who protested greatly because it was anime, to see the Secret World of Arrietty. In the end, she was crying like a baby and now I'm letting her borrow some of my other Studio Ghibli movies I have available. One step closer, maybe?

It really depends on the person. If they seen foreign movies and like them, go with subtitled. If they can't stand foreign movies go with dubbed.
Chances are they will like the dubbed version better. The high pitch little girl sound puts a lot of new anime viewers off.

Just let them know that anime isn't all about the super powered shounens, there are lots of other genres just like there are Hollywood movies.

There are a few things I'd take into account. If it's really popular among many people that might be a good starting point. Try and make sure it's not chock-full of anime weirdness, if they're thrown straight into something like that they won't take it seriously. Something like Death Note, Hellsing Ultimate, or AOT (I'm surprised at this one, I'd have thought the big naked people would put people off). And try to make sure it has a dub. My general experience is people prefer the sound of their own language, hell I'm one of them, and would rather listen than read.

I only show it to open minded people that I'm pretty close to. Most everyone I show it to don't continue to watch on their own, but say they like it.

I don't discuss anime with non-anime people. or show it to them. they may pass by while i'm watching something... and ask me, "is that naruto"?

...according to them, any anime related thing is "Naruto"...

I guess it helps to know what genres they are into and then suggest something from that particular genre.

I got my cousin into anime by watching Fruits Basket, which I might add is the anime that got me into the world of anime. She got hooked and in turn she showed me some great animes she found later on.

I tried to get one of my friends into anime but she's not much into it. She likes a couple animes that are older ones but can't get into the newer ones.

I also tried to get my little brother into anime as well, but he's not into it either T^T well, he will watch anime with me if I ask him to but he doesn't explore the anime world on his own </3

My dad likes some animes. I didn't get him into it, I mean when I was a kid we would watch different animes together like Tenchi Muyo. He likes watching Dragon Ball Z every Saturday morning. I remember there was a time where he was hooked on an anime called Monster and even watched it in sub when the dub went out. He's into more Sci fi -ish sort of animes.

Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist are tried and true. For romance/drama I usually start with Clannad or Toradora... or if I don't like them I'll tell them how cute School Days was.

For me, I was really sick for a month or so and was staying up really late. On Cartoon network around 2 am they use to play anime. I guess you can say my first technical anime I watched was dbz or pokemon, but I don't consider it to be. Anyways at 2 am a show Eureka 7 would come on followed by Full Metal Alchemist. I got really into those shows and once I finished watching those, I decided to see what other anime was out there.

From that point it pretty much grew into me exploring different genres and studio art styles. Now I can pretty much just scan the lists here on crunchyroll for certain artistic covers I find appealing and it will be a genre/show of my liking.

As far as getting others into it, I don't really talk to anyone unless they approach me about what to watch. Most of my friends know I watch it but aren't interested, but some do venture and ask. I usually describe a few different genres to them to see what they think they would like or some times I just recommend a show based on my knowledge of that person.

Make them watch hent-... Uh. I recommend shonen anime. It's a safe start. Most of my friends already watch anime so I haven't gotten someone into anime lately. I also wouldn't force it. If they don't want to then whatever.

Well. I think I was introduced to Naruto firstly, about 7 years ago.
Really it depends on their personality, I think the best idea is to show them a famous scene from an extremely mainstream anime (like Naruto).
But it depends.

I don't convert anyone.
