It's possible but I've never put too much thought into it. It's one of those things I don't like to think about.

I'm not very religious, but I am sort of religious I guess. I think if you're gonna say you believe in a "good God" you gotta believe in the opposite, right? Or at least accept it may exist.

I think that possession can be more strongly explained by things like mental illness, groupthink, and self-fulfilling prophecies.

Yeah, once was in a hostel and this chick on another bunk bed started screaming bloody murder at 3am banging on the ceiling. I woke up, jumped off the bed and without thinking ran the hell out of the room as fast as I could When I asked her what happened she had no memory of it happening and had a blank look in her eyes. Scared the living shit out of me, even to this day. That girl definitely was possessed by something..

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy"

I don't believe in traditional christian demons and the power of jesus to command them out.

It's more that there's just "things" that exist beyond the average human eye that make the brain feel like it has sneezed itself inside out and leaves you a sputtering fool as you try to either make sense of it or explain it to others...

There are ideas that can infect your mind and there's strange things that hover between those moments when you are awake and not. (then there's those moment where while dreaming you swear you're awake, as you just awoke from the dream you thought you were having and can feel things watching you with malcontent... and you drift n between that and a dream while, in the end you wake up to find both were but a dream....)

I don't know. When I was 13-14 I had experienced something else (two something else's actually) sort of take up residency inside me. It was weird being three people and one at the same time. Though more or less, we're one, different parts bubble up to the surface from time to time, like a nervous tic, and we're really haven't been the same since. (and I also don't feel 100% human either, though it bothers me less and less)

I have yet to see anything that makes me believe "demons" can "possess" (doubt until you have proof, ya know), but yeah...

Do I want to encounter it? nah...Not really. I'm fine just keeping it a mental musing...

I'm not looking to convert or scare anyone, and for the record I'm not nor do I believe I'm possessed; I was thinking about it in general.I think true demonic possession is real, albeit rare, and sometimes its very subtle and insidious, not as its depicted in the horror movies. I also don't believe in mass exorcisms where people line up en masse like some do, that to me is absurd, and its practiced really to make people feel better.
I'm not a cleric nor have time to reference the roman book of rituals or Malleus Malificarum as it were, but according to that text, prior to performing an exorcism mental illness must first be ruled out as the cause of symptoms. Also, there are certain symptoms that a possessed person would have that would be difficult to fake, such as knowledge of things that person would not ordinarily know, i.e. foreign languages , people, etc. Its not the same as mental illness even though the two might overlap, and more often than no its just mental illness. Its thus hard to detect to a point its dismissed. And then there's the line of thinking that if someone doesn't believe in angels and demons that alone makes them not exist. To quote Constantine, "I don't believe in the devil." to which John replies, "Well, you should, he believes in you." I have not met someone to my knowledge that was possessed, but then again the demon can hide itself if you think about it. Anyone technically can get possessed, but often the people that get possessed are either pious, good people the malevolent entity wants to test(meaning torture/corrupt), or those that dabble in the occult and made themselves marks. Its really scary stuff, esp after reading RL accounts and seeing enough of those better-quality horror films. Horror is not my favourite genre at all.

I'll clarify something I don't think demons exist in the traditional sense. More Lovecraftian that Book or Revelations. Things that reside between dreams and awakening, things that reside in the little whispers inside one's head that we rarely pay attention to. Things that make even our worst imagined devils with pitchforks look positively "good" by comparison. I don't think those things are capable of possession, but somehow are much more threatening and scary.

Another really frightening concept is from a horror film called "Pontypool" (I know you said it wasn't your favorite, and it sure as hell isn't mine either, but I have family that absolutely eats the stuff up). In it, an idea, or meme spreads and "infects" others causing them to murder or commit suicide. It kind of poses a good question as to whether or not ideas can gain a life of their own and "possess" others. (like the mass hysteria and "laughing epidemics" that have happened around the world over the years). In many ways, that may be the most realistic and scariest version of possession we may face.

This is literally all I can say to that.

I've seen my friend possessed. He was arching his spine to an unreal extent, spewing all over himself. Afterwards he started speaking to me in a language I've never heard of, smiling like a baby on sugar. I'm not sure if it was a demon though. Could've been something else, like a mischievous witch.
