I knew this was a bad idea, but I posted it hoping for half intelligent responses. That was asking for too much. A mod should delete this before it encourages idiots to show off their stupidity any further.

It's sorta 50/50. Plus, I don't even drive, so I wouldn't know. But it has its pros and cons, you know.

You already know the answer. You're just making it hard by convincing us to convince you.

I'm confused at what you are saying about relying only on the gears?..If you are you talking about letting go of the gas to allow inertia to slow you down, then it's not dangerous because it saves wear & tear on your vehicle and saves gas from constant acceleration. People should keep enough space anyway. Personally, I let go of the gas all the time to slow down as it quite costly for me to change brake pads :9

If I had to guess, I'd say extremely unless you are drive in the middle of a field.

Extremely. Sometimes you have to stop as fast as possible. Without brakes, you will get in an accident eventually.

When i had autoshop class in highschool a former student brought in his car because his brakes didn't work. He got to the school by pulling the emergency brakes every time so yeah it sounds dangerous lol

Didn't you say that you need to use brakes if the engine doesn't slow down fast enough. So you have the answer, why asking.

As the title states, is driving without brakes really that dangerous?

I drive a diesel truck and use my gears to slow down. It is a habit I have had since I started driving. I float all my gears up and down whether I am driving one of the semis at work or my personal truck. I tap my brakes a couple times before beginning to slow down, but then rely on my gears to slow me down when I can. In a loaded semi or pickup, I have to ride my brakes to slow down at a reasonable pace. But, unloaded, I just use my gears. Since I am not using my brakes, my brake lights aren't telling the driver behind me that I am slowing down.

A friend just picked up on this habit of mine and lectured me for a while about how dangerous it was to not use my brakes. Her argument was that someone could not be paying attention and rear end me. It makes sense, but if that ever happens, it will be their fault. Engine braking doesn't slow you down that fast. You would really have to not be paying attention to rear end a truck that is slowing down using engine braking alone. It's not uncommon to have to ride the brakes a bit if the engine isn't slowing me down fast enough, so the lights might be on for a couple seconds in each gear.

So my question for CR is whether this is really that dangerous, or if people should just pay attention while they drive? You tell me.

honestly i don't think its dangerous, the other driver would be a dumba*s for not paying attention to the vehicle in front of them and or shouldn't be tailgating you.
if they rear end you, my bet is that they were using their phone or day dreaming

and if someone does rear end you they are at fault, no question about it.

Thank you for being the first person to actually read the original post and come up with a reasonable response. You've done well. Gin-chan would give you a pat on the back and a drink.
