Attack on Titan. I hated how the Titans look (still do) but given the hype, I watched it and liked it. Still don't think it's as good as everyone gives it credit for though.

Love Live! - Thought it was just an Idolmaster rip-off and that the CG dance scenes were creepy. I caved having seen how popular it got and while I still think Idolmaster is better and that the CG is weird, I appreciate it on its own merit.

Wouldn't say I refused to watch them, but just didn't consider them a priority when their first seasons aired. Now they're each my favorites in their category. I'm so ashamed.

Madoka Magica. All the promotional stuff I saw made it look like a PreCure ripoff. Then I actually saw it.....

Princess Tutu

It looks like something my little nieces should be watching but it turned out to have a very mature plot with great characters, amazing music, and some of the best dancing I've seen in any anime. It's in my Top Ten anime.

Oh gosh, I started out avoiding several of what are now my favorite anime:

Eureka Seven: I don't like most Mecha and I tend not to like shounen anime about young boys destined to save the world. Which, in retrospect, is about like describing Hamlet as "boy sees ghost and kills his family".

Toradora: From the description, it looked like it was going to be just an awkward love triangle between not-especially-likable characters. Didn't realize that it would be the best love-triangle anime I'd ever watch.

Log Horizon: I liked SAO, but more because of the romance than the MMO aspects; I thought Log Horizon would be a bland show about MMO mechanics. Didn't expect an intelligent look at strategic thinking and the importance of building a political-economy.

Please Teacher: From the description, it looked like the plot of a bad porno but without the sex. And lets be honest; it does have the plot of a bad porno (boy marries alien teacher). Didn't expect to see actual character development and an intelligent look at two people falling in love.

Ah My Goddess: I thought it was just going to be a prolonged series of "nice guy dates perfect girl while getting constantly cock-blocked". I finally gave it a chance--now I like the show, and it's one of my favorite manga.

Nisekoi: Looked like a typical ecchi/harem anime but i ended up loving it after giving it a shot.

Yowapeda: Not really into sports anime but my friend told me to give this a shot and i liked it.
"HIME HIME HIME HIME HIME SUKI SUKI DAISUKI"

Parasyte: Heard it was a horror anime, and i hate scary things, but i'm liking it so far

For me, Parasyte -the maxim-, because I thought it was a spinoff like Persona 4: The Golden: The Animation that makes no sense if you don't already know the plot of Persona 4. My friend kept telling me to watch it and saying it was so good, so I gave it a try. I realized it wasn't a spinoff but an adaptation and liked it save for all the sex jokes. Thankfully, those have been gone for a while now and it is AWESOME!

For me it was Madoka Magica. About the only genre that I haven't gotten crazy over is the magical girl stories. But, I was at an anime convention and was talking to a vendor and he told me how it was on of his favorites. I ended up binge watching it after the convention and I love it.

Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun. I wasn't in the mood for a shoujo at the time, so I wrote it off. Boy was I wrong, in all the right ways.

Naruto. I've spent a lot of years in a indie gaming community (which was making fan games far earlier than "Indie Gaming" was even a coined term), and it had an ass ton of Naruto games in it that were just awful. I initially watched the series so I could gather ammunition to make fun of those "Naruto kiddies" as we called them as I liked to consider my tastes in anime to be superior to theirs.

The first series was indeed kind of a chore and I still don't like it a lot to this day. But Shippuden is quite excellent and has evoked many feels from me over the years. You really kind of grow with the characters quite a bit and I enjoy seeing a more mature cast than the 12 year old losers it started out as. But if it hadn't started that way there wouldn't have been the same level of growth....so it's all relative I suppose.

Jojo's Bizzare Adventure. I thought it looked cheesy as all hell but it's one of the best animes I've ever watched.

Shingeki no Kyojin. Didn't like how everyone was praising it so I waited til things went quiet about it.

Too much talking parts and slow scenes but I like it anyway.

hunter x hunter (saw the poster, and I didn't like how there were kids on the cover. thought the show would be kiddy like beyblade or yugioh. but in 2012, CR barely had any anime, so I gave HxH a go, and was my BEST decision ever.)

I heard about HxH back in 2009... about the first series, it was pretty popular even back then. but the kids on the cover turned me off during that time.
