think the bible did forbid first cousins, and even some non blood family (IIRC), but nothing after that.

I dare you to find that prohibition anywhere in the bible.

You may want to start with Leviticus 18 & 20.

honestly I was not turned off at all by the incest from Oreimo (not that there is anything.) I can understand why some people are into imouto....I know one guy who confessed to me that he and his gf roleplayed as brother and sister once for the kink of it.

Although, I have to admit Oreimo is the only anime with a theme on incest that I can actually put up with mostly due to its subtlety (more or less.)

Before scientific proof about why incest is bad came to light, and I think that didn't come to light until like the 1900's, I read that it became taboo sort of as a backlash at aristocrats who often inbred. Don't quote me on that.

If you think about it though it could be possible. People with a lot of property had incentive to keep that property in the family. On the other hand poorer people had more incentive to send their daughters off to get married and form ties with other families.

i think the way oreimo did it in the light novel is the correct way to do a incest anime

At least Aki Sora had actual incest. If I told someone I was interested in incest and they recommended Oreimo to me, I'd be disappointed.

you know that they still being boyfriend and girlfriend after the series was over

You do know there were 4 more episodes after the episodes available on CR, right?

Well, thank you, that was the intent

Japanese people just love themselves some incest. Well, what do you expect from a country where it's completely normal to marry your cousin.

You might be surprised how many countries there are were it is legal to do so. Even here in the US, where many people apparently believe it is illegal, there are a good number of states where even first cousin marriage is legal.

I don't know if I would consider it "normal" in Japan so much as non-controversial. The actual incidence of such is about 4 marriages per 1000, as I recall.

That was supposed to be a joke, don't take it so seriously
I am actually not from the US, but from Germany and marrying your cousin isn't illegal here at all, as far as I am aware. Sure, it's about 1 in 100000, so not reallly normal at all, but who am I to judge. There has actually been talk recently about removing the incest laws about intercourse between siblings even.

What I find amusing is a lot of religious people would be quick to say it is, but neither the Christian bible or the Quran forbid it.

Well, if the bible forbid it, there would be quite a problem since according to the bible, we pretty much all stem from incestual relationships

Meh. Incest is so common in reality and fiction that I tend not to care about it.

If you think about it though it could be possible. People with a lot of property had incentive to keep that property in the family. On the other hand poorer people had more incentive to send their daughters off to get married and form ties with other families.

What gets me is there are a lot of people that think that if two close relatives have a child, it automatically results in a deformed baby or one with a genetic defect. They have no understanding of how genetics work.

In reality, if you have two perfect strangers that have no relation going back 10 generations, but both of which have the wrong recessive gene, they will have a child with problems. Meanwhile, a brother and sister that had both won the "genetic lottery" and had no problems would have a perfectly healthy child, and even their decedents could continue to interbred without issue until genetic mutation (caused by environmental factors such as background radiation) introduced an undesirable element into the genetic code.

Even without bothering with genetic screening or testing, this entire part of the problem can be short circuited by simply not having any children, which modern technology certainly supports via multiple methods.

A lot of people also overlook the other point you brought up. The other reason incest is a taboo is to prevent formation of closed insular family units. I have my doubts whether that would become an issue in today's society.

Simply put, people tend to react to any discussion of incest on an emotional level, rather than an intellectual one. That type of thinking rarely (if ever) results in anything good.

1) Exploration of taboo or forbidden relationships is a common theme of romance stories in many countries. In Western Culture can see this basic theme play out way back in ancient Greek drama (Oedipus, anyone?) all the way to modern popular romance (the "forbidden love" aspect is one of the huge draws of both 50 Shades of Grey and Twillight, for instance).

2) In Japan, there is more of a focus on brother-sister incest, certainly, although in non-hentai Japanese popular culture I see a lot less references to both infidelity (at least I don't know of any really popular Japanese equivalent to "Bridges of Madison County" or "Unfaithful") or Mother-Son incest (see Odeipus, Hamlet, Back to the Future). So, you know, don't throw rocks if you live in glass houses, and all that.

3) As per the initial question, I do think that Oreimo's success helped encourage anime, manga, and light novel authors to introduce a little sister characters into their harems. Although in almost all cases, that character is only flirted with and not actually romanced (see: Mayo Chiki, Monogatari series, Haganai, Chaika the Coffin Princess, SAO, etc).

Out-right, consummated incest is still very rare, at least in anime.
It seems much more common in Dating Sims or Visual Novels, where even popular games can have both 18+ and all-audiences versions, and where the sister can be one of several potential romance partners. And that trend dates back well before Oreimo.
