Are you thinking of something like /forumtopic-788749/promote-your-group for a CR group? Or offline groups/clubs?

Basically, yes - that thread is for promoting a CR group. Starting a new thread just for your group would run up against the personal thread issue in the forum rules, so it'd likely get reported and closed.

There are some exceptions, though. Posts within groups are managed by the group mods, and can get around many of the site rules (they still have to obey a few, like about nudity, but they can ignore multipost, personal thread, and other rules). The group mods will likely determine if your post is acceptable, but many are much more open about such things.

You can mention your group in another thread if it is on topic - if a thread is about Pokemon, you might comment about the thread, and mention your Pokemon group for other Pokemon lovers. So long as you're on topic enough in your overall post, that kind of thing is usually just fine.

You can also put information about your group on your profile info, and in your status message, which appears under every forum post you make.

Some let it go to their heads. I'd cringe if site mods acted in the manner that some group mods do. I became disillusioned with the group scene for the most part as a result. I still belong to a few, and my own inactive group (which I know not what to do about), though.

Ah, if you ever want your own group to be removed, just make it closed (rather than secret or open) and report it with the reason that you'd like it to be removed. We site mods can take care of that kind of thing, if the reporter is the group creator

But there's no reason to have it removed if you don't want it gone. Inactive isn't necessarily bad! I have a pretty inactive group as well, but there's a post in there every month or four.
