Probably because it's stupidly easy to get a gun in the US, try getting one in Britain.

most people with mental problems aren't violent (other than some extreme sociopaths) and should be able to own guns, since no country has shown the ability to run a morally ethic asylum, then no country should try to remove rights from those who might think just a little bit different. my point is, if you don't understand something, your first response should be to learn more about it, not shoot them / take away their rights, otherwise they can't protect themselves from ignorant people assuming it's the "retarded person" who did it. I'm sure there are even more cases of police mishandling cases with the mentally ill, resulting in a death, per year, than that of racial profiling.

I'm a mentally ill person myself. I mean to spend more money towards drawing more attention to caring for those people, not castrating them. It's not a good thing to be mentally ill whether you're violent or not anyways.

Why are we blaming the mentally ill now?
According to my psychology teacher, it's been statistically proven that violent crimes or actions committed by people with psychological disorders is not more than the violent crimes committed by those without. Meaning that having a psychological disorder does not necessarily make you violent, and so not all of these shootings were the cause of mentally ill persons.
If anything, it's that these people did not know how to deal with their problems.

There was a conversation earlier in the thread where AiYumega said "These kids are just weak that's all." and I totally agree there.

I noticed the mention of mental illness in this thread. Just because someone is mentally ill doesn't excuse their behaviour and focusing on their mental condition just further stigmatizes mental illness. This is not an issue that occurs only due to the mentally ill, this issue is much larger than that and all people are trying to do is draw attention away from that fact by putting blame on the mentally ill. We had a similar incident in Australia a long time ago and thus strict gun laws were enforced and, surprise surprise, a school shooting has not occurred since to my knowledge.

^This
I have nothing against guns and people owning them, but it seems like what's the point in even having a freedom to bear arms when people will abuse that right. Let's just take away everyone's freedom, so no one can abuse their rights( sarcasm intended). I wouldn't mind some stricter gun laws or something to keep things similar to this from happening just about every month. These school shootings are getting old. I also look forward to how the news media will milk this story(they will most likely glorify the shooter) and how certain anti groups will use this as evidence for how <insert completely random, but popular thing here> is the cause.
I also feel bad that stories like this don't bother me anymore and I just see them as a way for the news to make money now. My condolences do go out to the family of the victims.

I stopped caring about what's happening in America now. As long as there's no shooting where my sister is going to school then I'll be fine, but after so much shootings it's kinda hard to care about people I never met.

Sure people will say what if it was yours? Well I'll deal with that if the time and need arises from it.

"To many guns".. Ya its not like it use to be easier to get them in the past(off the back of kids magazines delivered by mail, but wasn't a problem...) or not like you could just take them anywhere back then(used to be able to take them to school fine, with no problems).. ya ya, its the guns.. not the people..

Guns didn't "get evil"... people did. But ya lets keep blaming inanimate objects...
Most of you seem to young to have any "scope" of the situation. Learn some history.

Was this the shooting that happened near a school for troubled youth?

And for those that think armed citizens can't effect the government.

Think again.

The 2nd Amendment is there in order to keep the government in check. The government has no right to keep a firearm out of the hands of a responsible citizen. There are bad eggs in every society. At least in a country where anyone can get a gun, the law abiding citizens can be on a level playing field with the criminals. Criminals can get a gun anywhere... Weed is illegal in most places, but does that stop people from getting it? Hell no. When will anyone learn that illegalizing soething doesn't make it disappear.

Well, not to sound like a broken record, but you ain't taking my guns away.

why? 2nd ammendment.

kinda funny considering the 2nd ammendment was made to created a backup military, and therefore all the gun restrictions run contrary to origonal purpose of the 2nd ammendment. go figure.

Second amendment was another limitation on government power (In my opinion) because our government wanted to be able to be overthrown by it's citizens if it became corrupt, and yet you can no longer incite a revolt and be protected by freedom of speech anymore, which is horrific violation. for instance: do we really need a legislative branch anymore? What I mean is that its now possible for everyone to vote wherever they are via cellular phones and the internet, as opposed to 1776 where it was hard to even convene meetings that led to the constitution due to the distance some representatives had to travel (by carriage or horse) to attend said meetings. just issue everyone a tablet with biometric security features and bam, no more need for the representative democracy, instead direct democracy. I mean, if were just going to send idiots to congress anyways we might as well represent ourselves instead.

I find this idea very intriguing, but I still like the idea of polling places, It seems like it would be easy to exploit people voting from tablets... I would certainly prefer a more dirict democracy over all this Electorial College bullshit we have now...
