Hello all, I've been having an issue for the past three days. Crunchyroll loads up fine and quick but when I select a video to watch it stays on the black screen. After a few seconds it says there has been an unknown video error and to back out and try again. I've tried signing out of psn, turning off my system and even deleting the app and installing it again. None of that has worked. Can someone pleaseee help me with this, I needz my anime fix Thank you!

It seems that Time Warner's DNS service is faulty, which results in Time Warner customers not being able to resolve the IPs of our services properly.

Switching to a public DNS service, such as Google's, should work as a fix.

For those who are having this issue and have Time Warner Cable this is the fix!

Now, onto entering the DNS Server addresses:

Wired Connections:

Go to Settings on the XMB, select Network Settings and hit Internet Connection Settings
Click OK, then under 'Select a setting method', select Custom
Under 'Select a connection method', hit Wired
Next, we have 'Select the operation mode of the network device.' hit Auto-Detect
Now for 'IP Address Setting,' hit Automatic
For 'Set the DHCP host name,' select Do Not Set
Under DNS Setting, hit Manual
Select each number from your selected DNS IP address. It must be exactly what is given for you to connect properly!

USE ONE OF THESE OPTIONS
Google DNS:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

OpenDNS:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Cisco:
64.102.255.44
128.107.241.185

Hit Automatic for MTU
Hit Do Not Use for Proxy Server
Have UPnP enabled
Hit X to save network settings.

If you've got NAT 2, your router's in the clear for VoIP and other ports online games might use.

Wireless Connections:

Hit Internet Connection Settings
Under 'Select a setting method', select Custom
Under 'Select a connection method', hit Wireless
Under 'WLAN Settings,' hit Scan and select your router
hit right on SSID
hit another right on 'Security Setting' and enter the router password (if there is a password)
Then from here, things will be similar: for 'IP Address Setting,' hit Automatic
For 'Set the DHCP host name,' select Do Not Set
Under DNS Setting, hit Manual
Select each number from your selected DNS IP address. It must be exactly what is given for you to connect properly!

USE ONE OF THESE OPTIONS
Google DNS:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

OpenDNS:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Cisco:
64.102.255.44
128.107.241.185

Hit Automatic for MTU
Hit Do Not Use for Proxy Server
Have UPnP enabled
Hit X to save network settings.

Again, if you've got NAT 2, your router's in the clear for VoIP and other ports online games might use.

If you find a DNS Server that only has one IP Address, you can use that address for both the primary and secondary address. These servers are not in one city on the globe, so test out the servers until you have what you find what's best in your area.

This worked for me, Thanks Der Zoodirektor for defining the issue

I wouldn't call this a fix. More like a bandaid for a larger issue. Thanks to the users for detailing how to work around it.

Surely Crunchyroll will take some official action on fixing the app on Monday.

If the issue is with TWC's DNS system, then it wouldn't be up to CR to fix the problem.

It's not something we can fix on our behalf. It's a service issue of Time Warner, outside of our reach.

Usually ISPs are able to resolve such issues by themselves, but the changes might take some time to propagate throughout their network.

how do we go about complaining to Time warner about this issue, and also will the same steps work on my smart TV I haven't been through it all but I don't know if my tv has those options and also do I change that with my ps3 as well thank you guys for all your help.

It's not like a user complaint will actually help in this case. This is likely an issue affecting a specific subset of the hosts involved in our content delivery for the apps. Without knowing the specifics, no complaint will actually be able to give them usable info. Issues like these are actually quite frequent and normally don't require end user feedback to be resolved.
The faulty data should eventually be purged from their service automatically with one of their next service updates (these actually happen quite frequently).

If I'm not mistaken, the PS3 should have those settings. Probably the smart TV as well.

Many routers also have DNS settings in their options.

Forgive my ignorance as I know nothing of DNS settings, ISPs, and apps. My point is simply on efficiency. Which is better: a thousand users doing a thousand changes or one company making one app update?

Crunchyroll can not do anything to accommodate Time Warner's new parameters?

- TWC makes a change. Crunchyroll app cannot play episodes on PS3.
- TWC makes a change. Crunchyroll website episodes easily play on PC.
Following this line of logic, the app needs to adjust. What did TWC do to make the episodes unplayable in the app?

Again, I fully admit I'm too dumb in the subject matter to be offering solutions, but I don't think asking hundreds of customers to manually alter DNS settings is the most optimal way of fixing this problem.

Stop posting this misinformation please. It's not limited to Time Warner. Switching DNS doesn't fix it. The problem is on Crunchyroll's end.

The efficient thing would be for Time Warner to update their DNS. (Which I gather they are supposed to be doing, but who knows how quickly).

This isn't really something CR can fix by changing their apps.

Don't confuse what is going on with Time Warner with the long standing "try this" DNS switching.

As to your claim it doesn't work:

I haven't been able to watch crunchyroll either :'( It is doing exactly this.

Do I have to mess with complicated settings or can I hope this will fix itself quickly? Some favorite series I wanted to watch or finish watching are going to be removed soon so now I'm in a hurry to marathon some of them XD

Also I don't think we have Timewarner cable?

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE

Would it be possible for some of you TWC customers who have the issue and have not changed to an alternative DNS server to open up the command line tool of windows, run the command "nslookup" and give us the IP number reported there?
