You know that thing they talk about in Terraformars where when you see a cockroach you just want to squish it for having the audacity of existing in the same space as you? That's kind of how I feel about this thread.

I wonder if non-japanese people know being an otaku isn't something to be proud of.. It's kind of like an insult.

Moving this one to General discussion.
While a pretty good anime has been mentioned by the topicstarter, this particular topic isn't really discussing this one nor another anime either.

As for the topic at hand; Have a good one, this one isn't for me as I do not consider myself otaku.

It's a loanword. It doesn't have to mean what it does in the original language, and the words "otaku" and "anime" aren't the only examples. If you were to ask a German to let you borrow their handy they'd give you a mobile phone, not ask you how they're supposed to let you borrow their helpfulness/usefulness.

Otaku has gotten less negative over the years apparently, and many people now identify as Otaku.

^^thats mostly right, I just thought your example was a bit unclear, so I thought I'd provide one that I like better.

The word "Cafe," in French, means coffee. However, in (american) English, it refers to a place where one might go to get said beverage.
