Using it with the original meaning would make me a football otaku as that is almost always on my mind... living in a society where productivity is the only thing idealized and you are judged for going all-in on your private interests in your own time must suck.

In the case of this thread and how the word is used in this country it is definitely being exclusively used to refer to anime/manga otaku.

As for myself I choose not to identify myself with any one title or classification. I want to be as multiple as I can and keep on building skills new and old. I am me.

I think most people are getting this from the senior Japanese people. If you find Japanese people today and add them, you'd find that they have differing opinions on it- like us.

I know westerners who are fluent in the language and regularly hang out with Japanese people. They report pretty much the same thing.
