Huh, and here I just thought that it probably meant that you'd have to have a paid account to view them through Crunchyroll after they were moved from the "public access" (with adds) listings. I just thought that since it didn't mention removing the shows that the Vault that was mentioned was like the Manga section, where various levels of membership allowed you to view a different percentage of the titles.

My personal preference would be that CR would use another phrase, as it gives people the mistaken impression that CR still has access to the shows in some manner.

The first time I heard "back in the vault" was probably in the 90's, as used by Disney. I don't know if they still do it, but back then they would only release their videos for a set limited of time and then run ads that they were going "back in the vault", to drive up demand. The difference there was that Disney of course always had access to their own material, and were purposely pulling it off the market. For people that remember that, "back in the vault" brings up some negative (and in this case, untrue) connotations.

Did not know Disney gave warning before locking their content away. I only know that Disney will make a big to do about a specific title like Cinderella or Jungle Book coming out of the vault for limited time, but I never hear anything about when it goes back in the vault, though I could just be missing the announcement somehow. Their vault tactic has proven super effective, so it always leaves me scratching my head why the other studios do not follow suit.

We've generally always stuck to this phrase since sometimes we do get shows back, but we'll think about a new phrase that makes the terms much more clear for future (unfortunate!) takedowns.

Disney's been doing the vault system since the 40's. Originally, it was a setup of when to re-release their films in theaters. Televisions sets were not around yet. Every few years Disney would release an old film for the public to see or see again. It was largely thanks to this system that films that weren't successful the first time around (ex. Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty) gained a following and are seen as classics today. When VHS tapes made home video possible, the system gained a different purpose. Now its used for releasing dvd and blu-ray for a limited time. I personally think its dated b/c in this digital age, the limited releases and 6-7 year waiting periods have made the studio a prime target for pirating.

I just wanted to thank you for giving us two weeks notice. For some of us who really enjoy crunchyroll, some of the notices are so sudden, and others are extremely aggressive time frames such as Terraformars. This is a better way of communication. So thank you.

I can't recall if it was something they did on a regular basis, but I definitely recall ads on TV for one title advertising it as the last chance to grab a copy before it went back into the Disney vault.

As to why other studios don't follow suit, I expect with many titles that would just result in many people turning to the dark side if the title was unavailable. Even for those preferring to stay in the light, buying a used DVD or Blu-ray is a lot easier these days than back then.

What about the phrase "Last Chance To See"? I think that accurately describes the situation.

My Little Nightmare is going? I still have friends I wanted to show it to... I was hoping you guys would eventually get the special and the movie here too. I love it so much I tracked down the book it was based on (not even remotely the same story but oh well).
